I have a copy of baptism record that took place 6 JUNE 1841 All saints Evesham. It lists the son & both the father and mother.
Please can anyone advise me if both parents had to attend the baptism for their names to appear on the record? Or could just one parent attend and give details of the other?
The reason I ask:
This baptism raises something weird as it takes place on the day of the 1841 census. Listed in the 1841 census the mother is at her parents with one child (son who was christened ) and the other child is at her uncles (the mothers brother.) I cannot find the husband/father anywhere? (Probably not relevant but Neither can I find his two brothers or sister as yet who all would of been mid- late 20's!)
If he had to attend baptism to have his name listed at least that places him somewhere at that time. If not further checks required.
Should add he is not deceased he has more children and he appears in 1851 & 1861 census
Thanks
Paul

Re: Baptism question
Both parents do not have to be present. The named God Parents do. (If there are any).
If there is doubt about the father of the child, and he is not present at the baptism, you might find an "alleged" or "supposed" next to this name in the entry.
If they are not all in the same house on Census night then their surname in the index could be different. How many different indexes have you looked at?
I find that if it is spelled wrong in one, such as Ancestry, it is nearly always spelt wrong in others such as Find My Past and TheGenealogist, and more often than not, none of them agree

Re: Baptism question
Thanks Mark,
As both did not have to be present that probably means he was not there and tells me I need to look further into him and his whereabouts in 1841.
There is no obvious question of the parentage. The Parents were married four years prior. For some unknown reason (as yet) the father is not around on census night (and the day of one of his childs baptism!?!?) Makes me think perhaps he was otherwise detained.......if you know what I mean!
Another option as you said could be a surname error though I have tried many different alternatives with, as yet no joy.
He obviously does not avoid being listed in census' as he appears in 1851 & 1861
Basically he was married 1836 and for some reason during census night and one of his childs baptisms his family is not together( or at least that how it looks at the moment.) But then I ask myself if he was not around then why not have the child baptised when he is around??? Perhaps he was at baptism after all and down the pub on census night
Who knows................

Re: Baptism question
Hi Jo,
Sorry for the lack of response to your question. I think I have found him at another address in same area. His father died shortly after census date so I'm thinking (at the moment) he was spending time with his father as it looks as though these were the last few days of his life.
