I'm wondering if anyone would be able to kindly check for a baptisim entry for John Mills born abt 1828-1829 in the Tipton area.
I have John's marriage certificate which states his father was Daniel Mills but I can't confirm his parents details because the IGI only seems to cover the Tipton area up to 1826.
I think Johns' parents were Daniel Mills and Ann Edwards but need to confirm this before I can continue.
Many thanks and a Happy New Year to everyone Adrian

Can anyone say which archive this would be - I get lost at the moment as to what is where.
Tipton would be Smethwick archives and a likely church would be St Martins Tipton BUT it could be any church in the Dudley area or they may not have bapt him
Both archives have a list of holdings on their websites as to which churches they cover
I assumed that John would have been bapt in Tipton because he was born there but of course you're correct it could have been anywhere nearby and looking into it further alot of the Mills family born in Tipton seemed to have been bapt in Dudley.

Was he married before 1841 then or could that or a later census give any corrobarative evidence? eg living with/near elderly relatives - nieces/nephews etc visiting
I've got a copy of his marriage certificate 1847 (single) which gives his father's name Daniel and his profession was an engine man (also Johns profession).
The problem is I've been unable to find John on the 1841 census although I did find a Daniel Mills born 1789 living in Tipton which could be his father.
The problem is that I've found lots of Mills living around the Tipton area.

Adrian Just to confuse things - engine man is possibly going to cause problems because even in those days they tended to move around a bit - having said that he was probably proud of it so that could make it easier as he is more likely to quote engine man/engineer on paperwork
Hi Adrian, maybe John was baptised in a Non Conformist Chapel, there were loads of them in and around Dudley. Were the family Baptists or Methodists do you know? I have found that 'Engine Man' is usually something to do with the Coal Industry? HTH from Linell.
