*TBC archive 24hrs* 1841 Census

Post by mgc »

Hi and Merry Christmas everybody...

Regarding the 1841 census in the geographical area between Leeds and Knaresborough, I'm chasing or looking for the following persons: Jonathan Lewis and Elizabeth Fawcett. The specific placenames in that area of Yorkshire may be Wetherby or Sicklinghall.

It is my belief that Jonathan Lewis and Elizabeth Fawcett did not marry in Britain, and that they may have married in the U.S., but that they produced, incredibly, 3 and maybe as many as 4 children out of wedlock in Britain. The children are: Aron (or Aaron), Moses, Miriam and Robert. These children's given surnames at birth my have been "Lewis" or "Fawcett" or a combination of the two like: "Lewis - Fawcett." GRO records (per FreeBMD) of these children's births begin in 1838 with Aaron, and end with Robert in 1846. The records FreeBMD returns are a tad mixed and confused as to exactly what their respective given surnames were at birth; be it "Lewis" and/or "Fawcett." It appears also that all 4 were christened at Knaresborough.

In short, my question is: Do they, or any combination of these people appear in the 1841 census, and if so, I would be thrilled if somebody could send an image of the census page.

Thanks much......
Mike

Mike do you think Elizabeth Lawell could be your Elizabeth Fawcett because there are two children Aaron and Moses.

I have just looked at the original and thought it is written badly knowing that it might be Fawcett I think there is a possibilty that Elizabeth, Aaron and Moses are all Fawcett -- Jonathan is down as Farmer and Richard and Elizabeth MAle and Female servants respectively!

I think you are on to something... and Most Definitely - Elizabeth's surname would be "Fawcett," or something akin to it, i.e., "Fawcitt."

So... Elizabeth was a servant, and it appears then that fine young Jonathan was the farmer/landowner. Most interesting. They, all together, wound-up in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania by sometime mid to late 1840's.... not more than about 10 to 12 miles from where I live.

I found an obscure source on this side of the Atlantic that stipulates that Jonathan was here, (in the US), and returned to England for some unspecified reason, only to return again to the US (Sullivan Co., Pennsylvania specifically), with Elizabeth and the children in tow. With there being no GRO record of their marriage, it would follow that they were posing as a wedded pair when they got here.

This, their appearance in the 1841, is a most significant piece of the puzzle to be sure!

Annie -- I sent you my email address in a PM... had some probs actually sending it at first, but more or less figured out the ridiculousness of my error after a bit.

Thank you so, so much Annie!

Being a 'newbie' at this site, and at the same time learning the point-and-click ropes as I go, I think I failed to Thank "Maths girl' (above).. so Thank You for taking a look at the original census page and taking the time to make heads or tails out of the script. Very greatly appreciated, for sure!

After looking at the the image it looks like Elizabeth is a Fawcett to me, not Lawell.
