Having only recently joined this forum, I was casually looking through my wife's ancestry on the BCC website.
However I noticed something rather strange concerning her Step Father's parents.

Not wishing to be a smarty pants as I am a 'new boy' I was somewhat reluctant to pass comment but then thought that it maybe needed investigation as perhaps my own research might be wrong.

The gentleman who I am querying is James Tidal Parsons he would be my wife's Step Grandfather (if there is such a thing)

He appears twice, each time married to a Sarah Hodgetts and each time his death is stated as 1937.

However in one case he has two children (William being my wife's step father) but in the other case only one child a completely different name.

James's birth dates are different 1872 and 1889. My research only reveals one birthdate 1872 and I have no idea where the 1889 comes from, unless of course someone has a birth certificate?

It is also interesting to note that James Tidal's parents are different in each case, I favour Joseph and Hannah as being correct and their children not only had a James Tidal but a number of years later a Tidal.

If you look at the names on BCC the children are reversed from my understanding.

My question is. Is there only ONE James Tidal Parsons and if so, who are his parents?

Hope someone can come up with an answer and stop my head from spinning.

There are two James Tidal Parsons and they are related.
The error is in the marriage and I think you have wrong parents for your James Tidal Parsons.

All this was already on bcc

The two marriages to Sarah Hodgetts looks dodgy but I inserted from two sources Roger Boswell and Angelo Parsons Family Tree

If marriage cannot be found for 1872 James T. it is possible children shown are children of 1889 James Tidal Parsons and Sarah Hodgetts. Perhaps your contact can confirm but I think he has wrong Parents for his James Tidal Parsons and if he looks at Tidal Parsons born 1885 he could not be son of Joseph and Hannah as Hannah would be 50 when born and Tidal is grd.son on 1901 Census

All three children appear to be children of Sarah and James Tidal born 1889
Iris Irene born 1917 mother Hodgetts
Eliza Ann born 1912 mother Hodgetts( same christian names as grandmother Eliza Ann Parsons nee Jeffs

I cannot find James Tidal Parsons born 1872 on 1911 Census and no record of marriage so that appears to be error

So we have one marriage to Sarah Hodgetts in 1908 to James Tidal b 1889
that fits the census
and the other children are for him

and his parents are John and Eliza
that looks ok to me

He doesn't seem to be on the 1901 census but his brother Mark born abt 1890 is. Looks a bit fishy to me

Also, same family, the 1911 census has Mary aged 6 and Olivia aged 4 but it says Olivia b. 20 Nov 1906 (OK) and Mary b. 30 Dec 1913 (she wouldn't be on the 1911 census so was there another who died?)

Oh dear I have started enough Parsons running to fill a cathedral.

Must confess my first look at the replies sent my head in a complete whirl.

However unless I am either blind or stupid the one thing I didn't see until I looked back at the BCC was this

death info Jan-Deaths Sep 1908 Parsons James Tidal 36 Stourbridge 6c 54 This definitely ruling out that James Tidal being the father of my wife's step father William Parsons. Bill was born 10 March 1910.

Following all this most helpful information I think I can now amend my James Tidal's parents to be John Parsons and Elisa Ann Jeffs.

I would also mention that according to my wife, her stepfather William also had a much younger brother named Mark, though he doesn't appear at all as it could have been well after the 1911 census.

You will apreciate that none of the Parsons in question are actually related to my wife, as William was, I repeat, her STEP FATHER. However as there was obviously some controversy with the marriages I thought it worth bringing to someone's attention.
