Re: The black country
I was at our coffee and chat this morning and one of my friends mentioned this programme about the Black Country. Me and Ken watched it and really really enjoyed it. Michael was talking to two men and a woman in the pub, well we know the one man who called himself Billy, but that isn't his real name, it's actually Brian. Ken used to work and play skittles with Brian's brother.
Looking forward to seeing The "Wrenna" (Wrens Nest Nature Reserve) which is on tonight. Lovely picture of Hillside Road which is right by the Wrenna where I used to live with my family before we moved to the Old Park Farm Estate. Spent a lot of happy times on the Wrenna during the Summer holidays from school, climbing trees, picnics (jam sandwiches & water) and actually going down one of the Seven Sisters caverns which of course you can't do that nowadays. If you can spot 63 Hillside Road, can you le me know

Re: The black country
Why does Billy call himself Billy when his actual name is Brian? Is there a reason? Some trauma he may have experienced in life? Fascinating .

Ken thinks Brian's brother used to play football, but he definitely played cricket.

Re: The black country
It's little Brian Dakin from Oakdale Close Cakemore Estate. He lived around the corner from me .My mate Ray Hughes's cousin. His relatives come from Eel Street and Portway Road. Billy Spakemon ! A good footballer Brian. Played pro football for Swindon Town when in his teens and his older brother Neil played for Langley Celtic or was it another brother? Most of his family worked at Accles and Pollock at one time or other.
I wrote that without reading the link where Brian tells you where he grew up. I didn't realise he was born in the street next to me . I thought he was from Langley. The names he mentions i knew them all. Good days on The Cakemore Estate but i'm a few years older than Brian so it was the older brothers and sisters who were in our "Gang". We lived next to Brandhall Golf Course and fields all the way to Quinton Church. We went from one up one down in Eel Street with no toilet in the house to a semi detached with 3 bedrooms and a bathroom !

Re: The black country
We must know quite a few of the same people besides Peter Hill.
Brian's brother who played skittles is Neil who is 2 years younger than me and he married Lynn. When they first got married they lived in a maisonette in Tividale, close to Tividale Park. I remember one time when a load of us went back to their house after a night out and Neil had been brewing some booze and when he opened the door there was a load of cork screws on the ceiling where the beer had blown the tops off the bottles
Brian did work at a carpet company that was in Merry Hill when we first had our house and we had some fitted living room carpet off them.
I've got a lovely photo of Neil, Lynn, Ken and me enjoying a celebration at the TI Ballroom, think it was when they won the skittles. Must ask San to put the photo on this forum. Mmmm must find that other one I have with a group of us and I bet you would know them as well.

Re: The black country
Sorry for late reply grangers14. Yes, I did think about not being able to put the photos on the forum. We are not in contact with all of our old friends anymore after 50 odd years, so I won't ask Mally to put them on the forum. Thanks
