Looked up marriage for Alfred Russon Elwell and Alice Oliver
Married 16 March 1873 St Andrew Dudley
Alfred Russon Elwell Full age Bachelor (Can't read Occ) Living Netherton Father William Elwell Labourer
Alice Oliver Minor Spinster living Netherton Father John Oliver Church Warden

I can find Alfred and Alice on census after they were married but Alfred is a mystery before as in 1871 he is a boarder with Thomas Russon

A tree on Ancestry (Smart Family Tree) says that Alfred Russon Elwell is the son of William Elwell and Martha Peters, was adopted by Thomas and Elizabeth Russon and is with them in 1861.

His birth certificate has him born in 1852 and address on certificate is given as "Dock, Dudley, Worcestershire"

In 1861 his parents William and Martha are at Dock Lane, Dudley. William is said on the census to have been deaf for 20 years.

Thomas Russon is a Whitesmith in 1861 as are Alfred's older brothers Henry and William.

Perhaps William's deafness is a reason for one of his younger sons to be adopted out?

I've just been looking at that. Seems a bit odd? witness to William and Marthas marriage is Richard and Elizabeth Russon, wonder if there is a family connection there?

I've just looked at this again - is it possible to misread/miswrite Martha for Harriett? Otherwise this is saying there are 2 William Elwell both with the same set of sons but with different wives living in the same road! this seems doubtful even for those rather strange days

Can't understand why in 1851 William is with Harriet when he married Martha in 1846. Where is Martha in 1851?
Is it possible Martha and Harriet are the same person as they are both Dressmakers in 1851 and 1861
