*Archive in 24 hrs TBC*-Denmark here I come.....

Post by Vikinghunter »

In July I made a very brief visit to Copenhagen and met a delightful genealogist lady there who speaks pretty good English. Unfortunately I did'nt have time for any family researching as I was there for a function. I'm going back there again in a few day's time for a full week and THIS time it'll be for serious family researching with the help of the same kind lady.

Hope I'll have some luck and, who knows, I might be recognised as their "long lost" benefactor to a huge heirloom.......har har.

Actually during my flying visit there in July I went to a church and saw the very font where my great-grandfather was baptised. So moving......

Good luck with it! It will be interesting to see what records you find and what is recorded on them

Hi everybody! I just survived my week's sojourn in Kobenhavn. Delightful place but undelightfully expensive!

Visited the National Archives place there. Very impressive with virtually everything microfiched. Really was learning how the system works with the language barrier and incredibly difficult to read ancient handwriting the major challenges. However, I'll be back there for more major research before the year end. A lot of the archives are available online so can do some of it from the comfort of my own home here in the UK - with gallons of English tea

Had a break one day and popped over to Malmo in Sweden - only 40 mins by train across the bridge. Apparently a lot of Swedes commute daily to work in Denmark :o

Glad you enjoyed your time there and to have a lot on offer. Is it expensive online too?
It must be so hard in another language!

Thanks all for your nice comments

On the whole Denmark IS expensive (£4 for a can of coca cola :o ) but, funny enough, the Danish genealogy site (BMD) is free! If you're interested it's at www.arkivalieronline.dk but it's all in Danish lol! (although there is a brief explanation in English in there). Another difficulty is, once you've accessed the relevant records they're all handwritten and often impossible to read/understand. Luckily I had my English speaking colleague with me at the time to assist....whew!

Gradually my Danish's improving as I go along.......
