*ARC TBA* -- brick walls

Post by len636 »

I cannot find any record of my maternal grandmothers birth although I know the month and year and the fact that she lived to be 100 just, nor can I find her father's birth record although I have his death certificate. She had four sisters, a half sister and a brother. I know the names but not their birthdates. I know where their father died his occupation and the circumstances of his death and where he lived at the time but nothing more.
My paternal grandmother died in 1917 the year before I was born. The mystery surrounding her comes from a story she told all of her children who in turn told their children. I am the oldest of that generation and we none of us knew anything about our grandparents siblings. The gist of the story that grandmother told was that her mother was the daughter of a wealthy French family living in Ireland and her mother ran off with the Irish groom who, of course, was a servant. A cousin of mine has uncovered some information which may indicate who the family were: the head of this family being French and married to an Irish girl. Certainly my Grandmothers maiden name was Irish and we have some census records showing both her father and grandfather were born in Ireland.
The French family seems to have changed their surname twice, but not by deed poll, which means there are no records. The second change of name is to that which was the maiden name of my grandmother's mother when she married the Irish groom whose occupation has been variously given as blacksmith or the associated trade of striker. Would that we could only uncover more of this mystery.
