What is it like out there in the world of work

Post by Northern Lass »

As a few of you know I have to get a job!

now it has been 4 years since I last worked and how has it changed!
I want to know?
do they really time you for going to the loo!
Can you not swan off and get a buttie when you want!

:o

4 yrs is a long time
and the thought of a 20 yr old telling me what to do
unless he is as good looking as Bob...well...no way !

Should I just get me knitting out and give up?

:(

I would give it up unless you can get a cushy job Northern Lass, oh I know the money is ok and very handy but think about the time you will not be able to spend at the archives and on the forum , and you won't be able to swan about here, there and every where.

Or if you want to get your knitting out you could knit samples for Sirdar and get paid.

No but I am actually being serious
All these targets and you can and can't do stuff

I went to 2 shops yesterday and even my son was appalled at the customer service
they were so miserable!
no smiles
no friendliness

on the phone too I think that service on the whole is dreadful
if that is what they are like with customers
what on earth are they like with their colleagues

 :(

nah! this is a hobby
although if someone offered me £20 an hour I might take a butchers
but then you would have folk mithering you
can't be doing with been mithered

When I used to do temp work I was amazed at how petty some of the bosses were
one place only allowed you to visit the loo if you asked permission
I soon left that one

another one started you doing one job and then changed the job description completely
and wanted you to sort out stuff that they should have been doing
so left that one too

some won't allow you to have a cuppa on your desk or a biccie
One place I worked at as a clerical temp suggested that I also should clean his office too!
I told him what he could do with his feather duster!

So don't think I will do any temping!
no matter how tempting it sounds

Yeh! You could put that 'Big Mitt' to good use

How about asking at your local Archives if you could run 'Genealogy Classes' for beginners?

You almost live there anyway.....
If you would like to have your ancestors photo's included in our Gallery, please send me a pm.

Do you like shopping Northern Lass, if so you could join 'Helping Hands' doing the shopping for the elderly and you get paid for that not sure how much these days, I have a friend who used to work for them.

Annie :-)
