John Thompson/ Rosannah Jones

I have found this census entry:

1901, East Street, Lower Gornal
John Thompson, Head, 24, Kitchen Fender Maker, b Dudley
Roseahannah Thompson, Wife, 24, Brickmaker, b Gornal

John Thompson and Rosannah Jones were married 1896, Dudley Register Office, so I need a certificate to prove the connection.

I think Rosannah was probably the one bapt 5 July 1876, St James, Lower Gornal, d of James Jones / Ellen Rodway (b abt 1855 - her family is on BCC).

I think John Thompson connects to me, as my step great-grandfather (well as good as, he and my great grandmother weren't married, but lived together as husband and wife for many years).

My family have told me that the reason they weren't married was that John was already married and had a family in Gornal.

What are the odds that there were two John Thompsons born 1876 in Dudley who were both Fender Makers, with a family in Gornal.

I obviously need the marriage certificate, but in the meantime can anyone find John or Rosannah in the 1911 census (I can't) - I suspect there should be children with them.....

Jimmy, you are a STAR!
I think you've found both of them. I will still apply for the cert, but I think what you've found confirms my suspicions.

I'll post what I've found on the Jones and Rodway connections when I get chance.

Might just be coincidence but my great grandmothers brother was postmaster in Wollaston at the time.

I'm a bit surprised that both their children had died as my aunt told me that my uncle took her to see his 'other family' in Gornal many years ago - I wonder who they went to see??

Just had a quick look and think I might have found one of the children:

A submitted entry on the IGI:
Bapt: 10 Feb 1897, Lower Gornal, Emma d of John & Rosannah Thompson

Have checked: she is on the GRO site (link from RF) registered March Quarter, Dudley, mothers maiden name Jones

Rosannah Jones bapt 5 July 1876, St James, Lower Gornal, d of James Jones & Ellen. (Submitted entry).

1881 Census, East Street, Sedgley
James Jones, 30, Coal Dealer
Ellen Jones, 24, b Dudley

William Jones, 3
Rest b Sedgley

Marriage (another Submitted entry):
21 Dec 1873, St James, Lower Gornal

Pity about the submitted entries, which need checking, but it all seems to tie in (the children of James and Ellen Jones all have mothers maiden name Jones on the GRO site) - the marriage is on WestMidsBMD.

Ellen Jones, is, I am sure, Ellen 'Rodway' on BCC here:

Peggy Rodwa )Ellens sister), on BCC here:

Great Grandmother was Ethel Rowley- here on BCC:
https://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/t ... ver=409124
She and John Thompson never married (I have the documents where she planned to change her name by deed poll - she filled it in but never sent it off). I have John Thompson's death certificate, as John Edward Thompson, but he was not registered or bapt with that middle name. John and Ethel had a son Horatio Owen, born 1918 (now deceased). To complicate things Owen, as he was always known, married my mothers sister, so he is both my uncle and great uncle, my fathers uncle and brother in law, my fathers cousins were/ are also his nephews and nieces....
