*Archived* Great Synagogue of London.

Post by rayh »

I am hoping I just might find someone who is able to cary out a lookup through the files of the Great Synagogue of London.

The starting person would be Zalig Hart.
His son married in 1875 at said Synagogue.
The sons name Benjamin b1850 +-. his bride Matilda.
How many other children and their names did ZALIG have.
Zaligs wife was Hannah, was this his first marriage.
How far back and how much info does the file give us.
With their 4 children, Pauline, Charles, Sarah, and Joseph, Benjamin and Matilda would come to Australia. The year 1883.

Should you chose to accept this mission I can give you the address in Finchley.
As a housebound pensioner lookups are truly valued.
Best wishes to you and yours, Ray

Hi Ray
I don't have access to the files of the Great Synagogue, however, I THINK I have found the family you are looking for in the 1871 census, but the handwriting is incredibly bad (even for a census enumerator!!!!!)

But here goes .....
Living Kensington,Middlesex
Zalig Hart age 54 fishmonger born Whitechapel,Middlesex
Hannah Hart 45 born Aldengate(?) ????
Benjamin Hart 19 fishmonger born Whitechapel,Middlesex
Rose Hart 18 machinist born Whitechapel,Middlesex
Ly Man(?) 16 fishmonger born Whitechapel,Middlesex
Zalig Hart 6 scholar born Whitechapel,Middlesex
RG10/15.Folio: 29.Page: 49.

Back to the 1851 census, and things start to get a little complicated ..... :?

Soloman Hart head 33 fishmonger b.Middlesex,Whitechapel
Mary Hart wife 32 b.Middlesex,Whitechapel
Moses Hart son 5 b.Middlesex,Whitechapel
Betsey Hart daur 4 b.Middlesex,Whitechapel
Daniel Hart son 1 b.Middlesex,Whitechapel
Solomon J(?)oel nephew 22 assistant (fish) b.Middlesex,Whitechapel
HO107/1545.Folio: 286.Page: 3.

Going by the name of wife and children and occupation of fishmonger,I am positive that this is the same family as shown above in the 1861 census, I just don't know why Zalig is listed as Solomon .... :?

Hi Ray

I can't find any trace of Zalig Hart in 1841,1891 or 1901. :(
Nor can I find a death registration for him .... :?

I am so sorry I have not replied to these replies to my request. I admit to being a very infrequent visitor to this forum.
Thank very much to those who have pitched in and given me all of this material.
I'll taken all down and add it to the wealth we now have.
Regards, Ray
