from a previous thread, looking to see what we can find
It's for an elderly gentleman friend who has told me he would love to find some information on his paternal side cos his father died whilst my friend was very young Starting with his father Edward Ivor Simmonds who married Ellen Letton (he hasn't got the marriage cert)
so it must be this one...albeit his middle initial is incorrect.....

Found this...
UK, Railway Employment Records, 1833 1956 Edward Joor Simmonds Age: 15 Birth Date: 17 May 1896 Residence Date: 10 Feb 1912 Station: Cardiff Company: Great Western Description: No.8 1876-1915 Newport Division
We have his Army Discharge papers and it ties in with the following
Forces War Records E Simmonds 386594 Corporal 1918 Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers
British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914 -1920 E Simmonds [Edward I Simmonds] Regiment or Corps: 1 Siege Coy RE Regimental Number: 6594, 386594
He was discharged in 1920 and I've got a sneaky feeling that this could have been his 1st marriage (not known by my friend)

Is it a coincidence that he (my friend) has a 'half sister' called Eunice?

My friend was born in 1947 and has lived in South Africa all of his life until last year. Until I speak to him again, I'm left wondering when his mother Ellen took him there. Would she be on the passenger list?

On reading this again I realise that I made a mistake, I should have said...

I have given my friend that marriage cert and have now sent off for his father's 1st marriage cert hoping that it will give his grandfather Edward Robert Simmonds occupation at that time. I don't know where he was when the 1911 Census was taken
