Sarah Unknown (now confirmed as Robinson) on BCC

Post by sp1 »

This Sarah:

Was definitely Sarah Robinson. Have spent a very enjoyable day at the archives reading 'Genealogical Memoirs of Brooke Robinson' - an extremely interesting book thats going to take months to go through!

Brooke Robinson was a solicitor in Dudley, and MP for Dudley. His book seems incredibly well researched (I have seen this mentioned by others writing about it - he gives an account of his ancestors 'warts 'n all' with none of the fiction of other Victorian writers. He includes full transcripts of wills, deeds, etc, etc! Tons of them! He left money and property to establish the Brooke Robinson Museum (and many of the attached Council buildings) in Dudley.

To return to Sarah Robinson, wife of Edward Foxall (my direct ancestors!) - she was the daughter of Christopher Robinson and Mary Dixon. Christopher Robinsons will mentions his daughter Sarah Foxall, and, among others, his granddaughter Mary, wife of Samuel Silvers.

Sarah's brother, also named Christopher, was the ancestor of Brooke Robinson.

I already have a bit on the Dixon family, who were THE Dixons of Dixons Green!

For those familiar with Dudley, there is a big Georgian house opposite the square in Stone Street which was Hugh Dixons house - another new found cousin (he was a glassmaker).

Mary Dixon (wife of Christopher Robinson)

She was the daughter (and it seems) only child, of Oliver & Joan Dixon, after Oliver's death Joan married Ferdinando Dudley, of Netherton, who was a grandson of Thomas Dudley, Netherton, whose brother, Jeffrey lived at Russell's Hall - Jeffrey married his 2nd cousin Elizabeth Dudley alias Tomlinson, daughter of Lord Dudley and Elizabeth Tomlinson. All of a sudden it's all getting very interesting......

Edit: ps sorry for my ramblings, but it really is interesting, to me at least.....apart from the connections to the Dudley, Wilmer, Gellians families there is also a direct connection to Richard Foley (yes, that one!).

Thanks RF- that's very clear: don't know why I thought it might be Rolinson- it was about 30 years ago that I last looked at it properly and was researching Rolinson also (probably) at the time, hence the doubt.

Not sure yet about Oliver Dixons dob- there were quite a few Oliver Dixons! Also, I don't think anyone has ever found the marriage for him and Joan.

Ferdinando Dudley- bapt is about 2 posts above: the family appear variously as Dudley/ Sutton/ Dudley alias Sutton/ Sutton alias Dudley! Luckily there is lots of documentation for them (Collection for a History of Staffordshire Vols 9 and 10).

This Ferdinando is distantly related to the link you posted - but several generations back.
