Henry Sidney Grazebrook FRHS

Post by sp1 »

We don't have many of the Grazebrook family on BCC, and as I have mentioned H S Grazebrook in some recent posts here is a connection for BCC:

George Pearson was born 29 Dec 1821, Brierley Hill, son of Joseph Pearson & Phebe Parish here:
http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/tr ... ver=375126

George Pearson married twice:
First Marriage: 1843, All Saints, Sedgely, to Esther Wood

Second Marriage: to Margaret Giffin (note Giffin, not Griffin), born 12 Dec 1818, Hackney, Middlesex.

NB Georges birthdate comes from his obituary- he was bapt 1822 at Brierley Hill.

George Pearson and Esther Wood had a daughter, Alice Eliza, born 1854, Brierley Hill. She married 23 Jan 1872, Pedmore, Charles Grazebrook born 4 Nov 1847, Pedmore, son of George Grazebrook, born 21 July 1796, and Jane Smallman, born about 1809.

George Grazebrook and Jane Smallman were also the parents of Henry Sidney Grazebrook, born 6 June 1836.

Most of this is in 'Burkes Landed Gentry ' under the entry for the Grazebrook family. What Burkes doesn't tell you is that Alice Eliza Pearson eloped with Charles Grazebrook by climbing out of the bedroom window: I have this story from several different family members so I think it's true! Perhaps the Grazebrooks didn't want one of their family marrying the granddaughter of a coal miner from Brierley Hill, even if her father was a successful Firebrick Manufacturer! (Harris & Pearson).

George's wife definitely looks like Mary to me. If you look at the g on George it's different to the y in Mary.

W. Grant, Visitor.Mar, 32, Teacher of Music, Staffordshire Sme....
S. Grant, Visitors Wife, 31, Visitor, Middlesex .......

Looks like GRant, capital G then capital R.

Can't make out where born as the paper is torn on the right hand side.

Thanks Barb, my thoughts on Mary/Marg exactly. Perhaps her middle name was Mary?

Definitely no middle name- Margaret lived until 1905 and is buried in the family vault at Old Swinford, so George didn't marry again!! - in fact I spoke to her grandson, who was born in 1902: he had lots of family documents to back this up.

In all the other census she is down as Margaret so must have been a mistake on 1861
