Post by mumbles »

This Maria Morris married John Downing
http://www.bcconnections.tribalpages.co ... =413913491

1851 Census Church Bridge West Bromwich Staffs.
Margaret Morris Head 62 (wid) Pauper born Bromsgrove Worcs.
Thomas Morris son 17 Coal Miner born Halesowen Worcs.
Julia Ann Morris dau 15 Home born Halesowen Worcs.
John Downing lodger (m) 27 Coal Miner born West Bromwich Staffs.
Maria Downing lodger (m) 25 born Halesowen Worcs.
William Downing lodger 1 born Oldbury Worcs.

But then the trail becomes complicated as father of Maria is noted as William Morris Labourer deceased

1841 Census Birchyfield Lane Halesowen Oldbury West Bromwich Shrops.
William Morris 25 Labourer
Maria Morris 15
Margaret Swindley 45
Thomas Swindley 7
Julianne Swindley 6

It looks like Thomas and Julianne Swindley took on Morris name in 1851

But marriage for Thomas Swindley :- 20/3/1854 St. Thomas
Thomas Swindley bach. Dudley Miner father Thomas Swindley Stone Cutter dec.
Frances Ellen Ames sp. father Enoch Ames Brickmaker
Witnesses Mary Parker and Andrew Bishop

Marriage 9/1/1832 Halesowen St. John Baptist
Thomas Swindley bach OTP
Margaret Morris (wid) OTP
Witnesses Joseph Harris and Catherine Partridge

Why did Margaret revert to Morris in 1851 ? and children revert to Morris also before going back to Swindley upon marriage

A lot of women reverted back to their maiden name after losing husband
