"Complete"Divorcee in 1850 ?

Post by mumbles »

From Freereg :-

Marriage St Thomas Dudley
30 Sep 1850
John HAYWARD 20 Bachelor Miner Springs Mire
Catherine STAMP Age 21 Divorcee Dudley
Groom Father George HAYWARD Miner
BrideFather Charles STAMP Moulder
Witness One Ann STAMP
WitnessTwo James STAMP

After marriage name changes back and forth from Heywood to Haywood and I think Stamp should be Stamps

but it was extremely difficult to obtain divorce before 1900 as it could only be by private member bill in House of Commons and was a means of MP's making money and not available for common folk so is freereg entry correct ?

Unusual: not seen that before...suggest you get lookup to check.
1850 St.Thomas, Dudley DRO: 204/010/266.

Incidently there is an ANN STAMP married the same year @ St.Thomas.

Divorce in 1850 likely to be reported in Newspapers -- worth trying a look up there!

So the word Divorcee is not on that entry RF?
So the entry in Free Reg saying that is incorrect?
