Trying to trace Elizabeth Sarah Humphreys (OR Humphries) who had a child in Brighton Sussex in 1857, John Laing Humphries.
Her name is shown on his birth certificate as HumphrIES. However when he was baptised in 1858 it is shown as HumphrEYS.
There was a family of this name in Brighton around 1830 with a daughter Elizabeth Sarah baptised at St Nicholas 8th Nov 1833
with father George and mother Elizabeth. Can find no further trace of Elizabeth Sarah Humphreys, or Humphries, after 1858.
Any marriages listed appear not to be her due to age or birthplace being wrong. No deaths seem to tie up either. HELP!

Elizabeth Sarah might have had a brother, George John Humphreys b1829 Brighton, with parents of the same names. Also no
later trace of him either to date as age given for any deaths of this name are wrong too.

Hallo Peter, Thank you very much for all that info; However it is John Laing Humphries' (Humphress ?) mother who we are trying to trace.
Although not shown on his birth or marriage certificate as such we do know all about his father, John Laing of 61 Montpelier Road, Brighton,
who died Brighton in 1869 aged 71. In both cases (Birth & Marriage certificates) father's name & profession is left blank but John Laing
did register the birth and his Will goes a long way to confirming the relationship without saying so in so many words. The Laing family
originated in Newton, Nr Edinburgh, Scotland, and we have been there in connection with this research.
You have our John (Laing) Humphries correct at 41 St James's Street Brighton in 1881 and in the others you show. Thank you.
We also know all about most of the other people shown at these addresses in the various censuses and witnesses to marriages etc etc.
We live just off North Rd. Goudhurst, and amazingly, our daughter has just moved into the flat above John Humphries old shop!
Horsmonden, 2 miles away is the next village where John L Humphries' wife Amelia Waters originated from. That family also had shops
across Kent & Sussex in 19th century.
It took a long time but we also found him in the 1871 census shown as; John (Humphris) POTTER living at Ringmer Sussex with the Potter
family who previously lived in Brighton at Lewes Street.
However due to some areas of the 1861 Brighton census being missing or destroyed we cannot find him or his mother for that year.
It is Elizabeth Sarah Humphreys / Humphries, (John Laing Humphries' mother) who eludes us. We had thought that tracing other members
of her family, ie; George John Humphreys, who appears to be her brother, might lead us to finding her. But he seems to be a dead end too.

STILL LOOKING! Elizabeth Sarah Humphreys / Humphries b Brighton 1833, last heard of Brighton 1857. Possibly her brother George John Humphreys b Brighton 1829. No death found for George John either as any shown are wrong age to have been born 1829.
