Family of Elijah Cartwright

Hi,
While researching my interest in the above family, in particular, son Elijah who married Clara Ann Raybould, I came upon a sad tale about Elijah's daughter, Maria.

The Birmingham Daily Post of 13 Sept 1890 carries a report of the inquest into the death of a Maria Cartwright, daughter of Elijah and Lucy. It appears she was working in service in Blackpool and was arrested for theft. She escaped from the police and returned to her home but bought and drunk carbolic acid after she found out that her sweetheart, a George Woodhall, had finished their relationship. Verdict – suicide while temporarily insane :( .

Also, was wondering if anyone could help with my search for Maria's brother Elijah. His wife Clara Ann (nee Raybould) remarried in 1900 (a John Harris) but I cannot find a death record for Elijah. There is a record on Ancestry of an Elijah in a prison ship and a transport to Australia, but my membership does not stretch to check the 'world-wide' records to ascertain whether this is anything to do with the same family. :?:

Thanks...H

They stopped sending convicts out in 1868 so you can count that one out.

Elijah Cartwright Jnr's daughter, May Cartwright, married Joseph Heath on the 25th December 1907.

Getting married on Christmas Day is usually a sign of extreme poverty. It was often one of the only days the poor were not at work!

According to the marriage certificate, Elijah Cartwright was deceased.

The last census I can find Elijah is 1891.

M,

Thank you. I will assume that he died between 1891 and 1900, as his wife Clara Ann remarried in 1900.

Jan,
I think we should archive it as no further progress being made. Thanks.
