ARC - TBC Adoption mother how do I find her pre

Post by Melon1 »

Hello
I am researching my family history, my mother was adopted. I have her adoption cert with her mother's name but I don't know how to find her pre-adoption. I have no info on her only her name and where she lived at the birth and her occupation. I have no idea how to link her to the father, after some research and with a lot of help from people on here I am certain I know who he is.
Child - Ruth Appleton born 20/11/42
Birth mother - Joyce Mary Appleton, 2 The council Houses, Great Witchingham, Norfolk - Domestic Help.
Birth Father - Joseph Fleming 405 squadron RAF killed in action June 1942
I am completely stumped I have looked at BMD and found 4 possible women but even then I'm not sure.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Helen.

I think it would be easiest to order the certificate from the General Register Office http://www.gro.gov.uk/GRO/content/certi ... efault.asp

From that page there are links, and on one it says:

"If you do not have the GRO index reference you may still apply online for any event which took place on or after 1st July 1837 to 6 months from the current date (for marriages this period is extended to 18 months) provided you have sufficient information to identify the entry. A 3 year search for the index reference will be carried out. You should supply the exact date of event if you have it. If you don't have the exact date, enter 01/01/YYYY and we will search the specified year and one year either side. If you do not provide an index reference number, your application will take up to 15 working days to process." http://www.gro.gov.uk/GRO/content/certi ... efault.asp

So you should enter the things that you are certain of. You have the date of birth, and the baby's name, and the mother's name. I'm not sure if you should add the father's name or not. On the old paper forms it used to be possible to add a note, saying stuff like "I think this but I am not sure". If you can add the father but in a way that makes it clear it could be missing on the certificate, then that would be good.

You have to register online to get a password. I have never done this but I expect someone on here will have, if you need advice about that.

That should be enough for them to do the search for you and send a certificate. It says that you get a refund if it is unsuccessful.

I am sorry, I got confused, happens to me a lot!

Hmm, so you know the name and can guess the birth year within reason, but otherwise it is a bit open.

Perhaps the 1939 register will help when it comes out?

The council Houses, Great Witchingham, Norfolk

how far do you live from the above you might get something if you can view the register at the local church to see if there are any simlar enteries for lots of single mothers ? assuming they were baptised ? might be streching it but someone might still be alive that might tell you something ?

She must have either married after having the baby or else died unmarried.

There is this one

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 Birth, Marriage & Death View Image
Name: Mary Joyce Appleton
Birth: Oct 1908 - Aylsham, Norfolk

who may or may not be this one

Name: Joyce Mary Appleton
Birth Date: 17 Oct 1908
Date of Registration: Jun 1991
Age at Death: 82
Registration district: Poole
Inferred County: Dorset
Volume: 23
Page: 81

that would make her older than the father.
