I am a Family History Reasearcher, not a Genealogist.
As I understand it, A Genealogist is simply looking into the origins of names and the hereditary Lineage. A genealogist is not going to need to know the details of how uncle Jim rescued a woman from drowning in a canal or how many Illegitimate children he had.

Hit a Brickwall? Have you lost all trace of someone? Do not despair, simply make a note they were abducted by aliens! Don't believe in aliens? No problem, just write them off as having disapeared in a time portal

But quite often the "hows" and the "whys" lead you to the "whos" - and even if you're only interested in the direct line, it's sometimes the collateral lines that help lead you back along the direct line!

Re: what kind of genealogist are you?
Well said Loopy Lou.I don't think i've come into contact with anyone on here who thinks of genealogy as "simply looking into the origins of names and the hereditary Lineage".
I think you'll find Andy that we all like to know the ins and outs of the people we are researching.

Re: what kind of genealogist are you?
Yes the lines are now blurred, but I refuse to call myself a genealogist as I am a family history researcher!
The word Genealogist seems to be evolving into a word which is a generic word for all kinds of research and so on.

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.
