ARC TBC.............DOWNES-ROSE, WALLACE, YOUNG, CARTWRIGHT-

Post by GreekEnglishGal »

Hello all I have a few relatives from the Black Country areas, well actually a lot but I will start with my most immediate:

(Grandmother)Helena May DOWNS-ROSE b 21 Aug 1924 in Dudley, Staffordshire;d. 01 Jun 1996 in Brigdport, Saginaw, MI, USA. She was a nurse during WWII and met my grandfather John Richard YOUNG who was serving at the time. He was b 05 March, 1925 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire d. 28 Dec 2010 in Saginaw, MI, USA.

Maternal Grandparent's side:
Helena's father was Frederick Nelson DOWNS-ROSE b 06 Apr 1900 in Dudley, Worcestershire, d. 18 Mar 1981 Scotland? He married Florence May WALLACE b. Dudley, Worcestershire in Mar 1889; d. Dec 1959 in Ikeston, Derbyshire, England. They also had a son Godfrey DOWNS-ROSE b. 21 Nov 1922 (who I believe has a relative on this forum as well :).

Frederick's father was William ROSE b 1852 in Cradley; Heath, Staffordshire; d. 06 Apr 1919 in Dudley? He had a "special friend" Ellen DOWNES b. Jan 1876 in Nettserton, Worcesershire; d. 16 Jul 1901 in Dudley. She was Frederick's mother but not Williams legal wife who happened to be Jane SEVERNS; b. 07 May 1857; d. 4 Jun 1919? Frederick also had a sister Beatrice who died shortly after birth in 1898.

Paternal Grandparents side:
John's father was Henry Archer YOUNG b Oct 1884 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire; d. 30 Oct 1957 in West Bromwich. He married Ethel CARWRIGHT, who I cannot find anything about. They had 4 children; the other two deceased besides my grandfather John were Margaret YOUNG, who I believe was adopted and Philip Henry YOUNG b 1918 in West Bromwich. Philip died in Japanese War Camp in either 1944 or 1945. I think I found a document that states 26 Jul 1945, but my mother says 1944 and it was at a war camp so who knows. There is another "child" and is alive, so I won't mention them. Margaret YOUNG married a man named Frank FIELDS. They have two children I believe.

So that's my story or rather their story :)

Do you have the marriage record for Henry Young and Ethel Cartwright?
West Midlands Marriage indexes for the years: 1917
YOUNG Henry A CARTWRIGHT Ethel West Bromwich, St Andrew Sandwell Register Office 26/4/386

If you do, do you have Fathers name and occupation and witnesses names?

No, all I have is her surname and it took place in West Bromwich. I found one of her kid's birth record with her surname on there. Very odd...

Maybe I am not looking hard enough. I will ask my mom about Ethel, she has a great memory about her parents' family even though she barely met them.

So talked to my mother tonight about Ethel Cartwright, turns out she knew a lot. I finally found Ethel and her gigantic family. Good Lord people used to have a lot of kids. She had numerous siblings as did her parents. This will take a lot of time

Times were hard enough back then for women, I can't imagine parenting 10 kids. I don't think there was much co-parenting like there is today. I have two full-time stepchildren and oh my...

I wouldn't be able to hang out with these tough ladies!

I don't have the actual records, but I'm sure my mother does. Henry Archer YOUNG was my great grandfather born in West Bromwich, Staff, he married Ethel CARTWRIGHT and I know for sure had three kids: John Richard YOUNG (my pop pop), Linda YOUNG, and Philip Henry YOUNG who died in a Japanese War Camp in 1944 ( not sure how she knows exact year). They adopted Margaret J Young who was Ethel's sister Alice Maud CARTWRIGHT's daughter who died in 1918. Margaret's real father was Gilbert M WILKINSON.

BTW Linda is still alive, I have never met her since I am in the states but my mom has many times...

Let me get back to you on her, I must have received it from My Heritage via another tree, I will double check. I have that she died 6 Apr 1919.
