ARC TBC - Arnold Edwin Fell

Post by gandalf458x »

My brick wall is my grandfather Arnold Edwin Fell born Sheffield (Ecclesall Bierlow) on 29 Dec 1891. He married Maud Aaron on 29 July 1919 in East Ham, Essex. They had 2 children, my mother and uncle in 1921 and 1924.

He was a merchant seaman and I have his identity and service certificate number 24619 dated 22 Oct 1918; his rank is 4th officer. His service record shows he served on War Hound (vessel number 142704; he was engaged on 14 Nov 1918), Lodore (113143; Sept 1919), P?ain (28 Feb 1920) and La Rosarina (132823; 3 Sept 1921).

He is listed amongst the passengers on RMS Trent from New York to Southampton, arriving on 16 Mar 1914, having embarked at Barbados, and his occupation is given as seaman. He is also listed in the manifest of aliens employed on the vessel as members of crew of the SS Pyrrhus from London to New York via Plymouth, arriving on 25 May 1918; he is listed as an able seaman and was engaged on 9 May.

In 1919 he was in the RNVR and his service record, number MC1418, shows he was an able seaman on HMS Denis Casey on mine clearance operations. His service record shows that he was demobilised on 11 Sept.

He left my grandmother and their children some time after 1924. I have copies of court documents where Maud applied for custody of the children and for maintenance. His last known whereabouts were in Sept 1927 when he was living at 12 Clarence Road, Croydon, Surrey; however he was not on the electoral register at this address in either 1927 or 1928.

I'm just wondering where else I can go. Hope I've not forgotten anything...

Have you checked for a departure for him? There is one possible in 1925, heading for Gibraltar (FMP)

Thanks guys, and apologies for a late reply. I forgot to tick Notify me if a reply is posted!

It's possible he's one of those deaths peterd. I have the former's death certificate and it could possibly be him.

The departure to Gibraltar looks interesting gardener. Where was that? What is FMP?

Thanks both
Cheers G :)

He died at the Consumption Hospital; the informant was B A Fell, his son, of 4 York Avenue, and his occupation was given as a chemical engineer. The change of occupation doesn't seem likely somehow, but is possible. It seems entirely possible that Arnold would have had another family somewhere but there's nothing to tie them together.

Many thanks Jimmy

Interestingly I have the marriage certificate for Arnold with Hilda Gwendoline May Edwards at St George, Sheffield, on 25 Feb 1928.

Arnold is given as age 22, a bachelor, a miner; his father is John Thomas Fell, a cutler.
Hilda is age 21, a spinster; her father is William Henry, a tin smith.

Arnold's age is well out - he would have been about 36, and his father was Edwin, who happened to be a cutlery manager.

Thanks again, Jimmy

I have his service record and medal card and his service on Pyrrhus which I found through Ancestry or Google/National Archives, but the Gibraltar journey wasn't given when I looked. That may have been his last trip as a merchant seaman.
