ARC TBC........Edwin Toye b 1860----
Hi,
As many of you may remember I was struggling to link Toy(e)'s in the Black Country, to those in Chester.
Well I know that my great grandfather Thomas Toye turned up in a Chester workhouse in 1901 with his brother John Toye, but his Father Edwin Toye disappeared.
The mother Ellen Toye appeared in 1901 in what I believe is a workhouse in Wordsley.
I know this or I believe this because in 1901 she appeared in the census with a lot of people, and on close inspection the younger members of the household were actually born in Wordsley Workhouse, so its safe to assume that is where she is here. (I've attached the census report)
I can't seem to find her in the 1911 census, but I do have evidence that she died in 1921.
I'd love to know where she was in 1911, and also where she lived out her days.
Nick

Re: Ellen Toye
The sons were in a Working Boys Institute which is not a Workhouse in 1901.
They are more like boarding schools with teachers and classrooms.

Re: Ellen Toye
Yeah its kind of what I meant, sorry.
I know where they ended up, but their parents never came with them, and there was no relatives up here who they stayed with. Their sister ended up living with her grandmother, so something has gone on with Edwin the father.

Re: Ellen Toye
There is a Helen Toy living with John & Lucy Haycock at 4, Gaunt's Yard, High Street, Halesowen (registration district 373, enumeration district 9, schedule 37).
Details as follows:
John Haycock, Head, 65, Married for 14 years, no children, Farm Labourer, born Halesowen
Lucy Haycock, Wife, 56, Married for 14 years, no children, born Halesowen
Helen Toy, Boarder, 49, Married for 31 years, 4 children born, 3 living, 1 died, born Kidderminster
Obviously there are some discrepancies between this entry and the 1901 entry but it was the only one I could find that looked remotely possible. Do the details about marriage and children fit with your Ellen?

Re: Ellen Toye
No sorry.
Ok, I'll give you more details.
Ellen Toye b1853
Edwin Toye (spouse) b1860
Children
Thomas Toye b1883
David Toye b1885
Eliza Toye b1888
In 1891 they all appear on the census in Quinton. In 1901 Ellen appears in the census at Wordsley Workhouse, Edwin has vanished completely. Thomas and David appear in Chester, and Eliza is living with her grandmother.
In 1911 Ellen doesn't appear, I also can't find Eliza as she is probably married. Thomas and David still in Chester.

Staffordshire Record Office hold the Wordsley Workhouse (Stourbridge Union Workhouse) records.
Take a look at Peter Higginbotham's web site http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Stourbridge/#Inmates

Re: Ellen Toye
Yeah I've got this page bookmarked. So the records were not kept internally? They are only in the census?

Re: Ellen Toye
Edwin death certificate has never shown up.
I found two other Edwin's in the same area but I discovered they weren't the same one.
It's the pivot point in my family leaving the Black Country and moving to Chester. My oldest living relative, who is the grand daughter of Thomas who moved from Quinton to Chester sometime between 1892 and 1901, says that Thomas her grandfather was very quiet about his past.
