" Complete"William Mathews

Post by mumbles »

As someone who grew up in Halesowen and spent many times walking and playing in The Leasowes I was interested to come across on 1861 Census The Leasows Lapal
William Mathews 64 Iron Master & Magistrate
It was a servant I was researching but it would be interesting to learn more and who lived in Estate in all Census periods

Mumbles after the death of Wm Shenstone in 1763 the Estate was sold to Apphia Peach widow of the Governor of Calcutta Joseph Peach. Apphia left the Leasowes in 1772 having a whirlwind romance with Thomas Lytttelton, son of the then Lord Lyttleton. The Leasowes was purchased by Edward Horne in 1773, he demolished Shenstone's House and built the present structure. John Wesley who was a visitor in 1773 remarked that in the whole of England there was no other place so beautiful. In 1806 Matthias Attwood bought The Leasowes, his unmarried daughter Mary Ann lived there until 1865, when the house was sold to a Benjamin Gibbons. Benjamin was a Partner in Corbyns Hall Colliery and Iron Works Kingswinford. His son was John Skipworth Gibbons. No mention of your Wm Matthews?

Found connection to William Mathews as his wife Rachel Maria Attwood was youngest daughter of Mathias Mathews .
I will put details on later
I have found Mathews family on all Census records bar `1881 Benjamin St. John Attwood Mathews and his wife Florence used hyphenated surname Attwood-Mathews in all records after 1891

Thanks Mallosa , That is correct address but Pontrilas

That 1841 Census for Mathews is correct one as the family connect up to Jeremiah Mathews who had six sons one of whom Charles Mathews was a famous mountaineer who formed the Alpine Society with a cousin Benjamin Attwood Mathews. This would make William Mathews brother of Jeremiah which ties up as on 1861 Census Wiliam and Rachel at Leasows have visitors Marrianna Mathews and Francis Claughton Mathews who were children of Jeremiah ( Double entry for these two as they are also with father in 1861)

Found that records on bcc were incorrect for Thomas Attwood as it was shown that he married Elizabeth Unknown who lived till 188
In fact he married twice and children were all from first marriage to Elizabeth Careless who died 1840 and he then married Elizabeth Grice who lived at The Boynes with him in 1851 and after he died at The Boynes until she died in 1888.
I have corrected records and attached children to correct mother
