ARC TBC -Lowe family of Wordsley - part 2

Post by Marchesgirl »

This is the second of two posts about two generations of Lowe families in Wordsley and concerns the mother of Emma, the subject of the first post.

Edward Lowe and Ann Challinsworth were married at Wombourne in 1820 and subsequently baptised 8 children at the Parish Church, Kingswinford. Edward died in 1836, aged just 38.

In 1841, Ann and her children are living at Wordsley Green; a man named John Lander is living with them. Between 1840 and 1845, Ann baptises a further 3 children at the Parish Church – William Lander Lowe in 1840 (born 20th March 1840), John Lowe in 1844 (born 23rd March 1842) and Hannah Lowe in 1845 (born 25th November 1844) - birth dates are taken from the baptismal register. The ‘Trade or Profession’ column in the baptismal register is blank for William and John’s baptisms but reads ‘Widow’ on Hannah’s.

In 1851, Ann’s unmarried children plus Ann’s widowed daughter Emma and her two children, are still lodging with John Lander. There is a 50 year old widow named Ann Sutton living with them whom I suspect is actually Ann Lowe nee Challinsworth.

In 1861, Ann (now back to Lowe again) is living with her two youngest children, John and Hannah, her granddaughter, Elizabeth, and brother John Challingsworth. I’ve been unable to find her in 1871 but in 1881, she is living with her daughter, Emma.

Again, I think I’ve gone as far as I can without ordering GRO certificates. I’m fairly certain that John Lander is the father of William Lander Lowe and probably the father of John and Hannah Lowe too. However, I can’t find a birth registration for a William Lander Lowe (although there is a William Lowe in the right year and quarter) nor can I find likely birth registrations for John and Hannah. I haven’t found marriages for any of them either so don’t know who they claimed their father was.

Does anyone else link to this family or got any ideas on other avenues of research before I start ordering certificates?

Claire can you not search the likely Parish Registers for Baptisms & Marriages, even if you could just find a few of them?

Hi Linell,

I've found the baptisms for all of Ann's children - the eldest 8 show Edward as the father and the 3 born after Edward's death don't have father's details specified. On the baptism of the youngest (Hannah), it says Ann is a widow.

I've searched for marriages of William, John and Hannah for possible marriages but no luck so far.

All the children were baptised at the Parish Church, Kingswinford which was St. Mary's up to 1831 and then Holy Trinity, Wordsley. So, all Edward & Ann's children up to and including Eli were baptised at St. Mary's then Ellen and Maria (plus William Lander, John and Hannah) were baptised at Holy Trinity, Wordsley.

That changeover of churches is so confusing :?
