Dodman's Point - English Channel

When I 1st started doing genealogy I was conversing with a historian on - line. I told the story about Dodman's Point & how it got this name, by what was lead to believe here in Ontario.
The story I was told was that a ship was shipwrecked there & the captain was a Dodman & that the point was named after him. Well the historian dismissed this story completely stating thatthe point was surveyed by Dodman's who at the time were surveying the country side maping & making roads with their lay sticks. The historian told me that the " DODMAN " was refered to as " THE SNAIL ", leaving their mark all across England. We may be talking pre-druid era, I am not sure.

Is there any records of whom these Dodman's were & at what time period I am talking about?

I know this about Dodman's Point, below it' s 240 ft high cliffs the waters are very trecherous, many ships have been lost here. At the bottom is Enny's Dodman, rock formations, a small light house stands out in the channel from shore. On top of the point a fort once stood & the footings for the fort, that the Dodman's surveyed for are still there. A cross stands ontop the point as a marker for the ill fated ships & passengers. You can only get to the point by air, boat, or walking.

Any information about Dodman's Point would be deeply appreciated!!!!!!!!!
