ARC TBC - Elijah Baker

Post by Marchesgirl »

Elijah Baker http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/family-tree/bcconnections/244853/60450/Elijah-Baker-Family

The illegitimate son of Priscilla Baker (although BCC shows him as the son of Priscilla Knowles) was baptised at St. Mary's Church, Oldswinford:
20-10-1805 Elijah son of Priscilla Baker, Base

He married Ann Forrest and in 1841 is living at Waste Bank, Lye:
1841
Waste Bank
Elijah Baker, 30, Forgeman, Y
Ann Baker, 35, Y
Benjamin Baker, 15, Y
Eri Baker, 7, Y
Ori Baker, 5, Y
Zeri Baker, 3, Y
Mary Baker,1, Y

Ann Baker nee Forrest died on 28-06-1847 at Waste Bank, Wollescote, aged 41 years. Cause of death was Rupture of the spleen, Occasioned by a blow. Elijah was tried for her manslaughter but acquitted.

BCC has a possible death for Elijah at Kingswinford in 1852. However, I have a death certificate for an Elijah Baker died on 06-06-1881 at Waste Bank, Wollescote, aged 77 years (b. c. 1804). He was a Sheet Iron Roller, and died of Accidental Death by falling down stairs (he was drunk at the time  )

I am sure that this is 'my' Elijah as his occupation is correct and his age at death fits with the baptism. Also, the circumstances of his death ring true as, in the reports of Elijah's trial for Ann's manslaughter, it turns out that the assault occurred when Elijah was recovering from the previous night's intoxication.

Unfortunately, I can't find this Elijah in any censuses after 1841. Please can anyone help?

Update: Elijah Baker

Post by Marchesgirl »

Update: Have now found a newspaper report from 1854 when Elijah was in trouble again for assaulting his second wife, Elizabeth, and deserting her and his family. It mentions that his first wife died from his ill treatment so I'm fairly sure it's the right Elijah.

Second wife is possibly Elizabeth Williams nee Morris (I'd previously discounted this marriage as Elijah's signature did not match that on the marriage to Ann Forrest).

St. Luke"™s Church, Reddal Hill:
11-11-1849 Elijah Baker, 39, bachelor, Millman of Reddal Hill, son of John Baker, Collier, m. Elizabeth Williams, 28, widow of Reddal Hill, daughter of William Morris, Collier. By Banns. He signed name, she made mark. Wits: George Morris & Elizabeth Evans.

They appear to have had 2 daughters, both named Joanna, baptised at St. Thomas's Church, Dudley:
06-07-1851 Joanna daughter of Elijah & Elizabeth Baker, Tipton, Sheet Iron Roller, b. 20-09-1850
31-10-1852 Joanna daughter of Elijah & Elizabeth Baker, Tipton, Roller, b. 18-07-1852

Joanna baptised 1851 died in the September quarter of 1851. The newspaper report says that Elijah absconded and was apprehended between Glasgow and Edinburgh! Elizabeth and her child (presumably Joanna bap 1852) were chargeable to Tipton parish. Elijah is decribed as 'a dangerous ruffian' and 'an evil-looking fellow' - I don't know whether to be delighted at finding so much information about him or mortified to be related :!:

I would like to try and prove that it is the same Elijah before you add the information to BCC - the stumbling block is that I can't find him in any census after 1851. :(

Could we wait and see if anyone is able to trace him?

Thanks.

So the newspaper report you have says...
(Update: Have now found a newspaper report from 1854 when Elijah was in trouble again for assaulting his second wife, Elizabeth, and deserting her and his family. It mentions that his first wife died from his ill treatment so I'm fairly sure it's the right Elijah. )

that then seems like it is same Elijah.

Have you looked in the actual registers at signature Marchesgirl?
to see if they do match.
When you send for certifs they dont always photocopy the actual entry but transcribe it.

is this marriage from PR?

Hi,

I have a photocopy of the register entry for the marriage of Elijah Baker to Ann Forrest - will e-mail as I can't work out how to attach it.

Here's a transcript of the death certificate:
Elijah Baker died on 06-06-1881 at Waste Bank, Wollescote, aged 77 years. A Sheet Iron Roller, he died of Accidental Death by falling down stairs. The death was registered by a certificate from Ralph Docker, Coroner for Worcestershire, on 14-06-1881. The Inquest was held on 11th June 1881.

I realised the "burial in May but death in June" error this morning  Am trying to find my original notes to see if it was a typing error or I copied it down wrong. Death is definitely 6th June.

The 1861 and 1871 census returns posted by Rocky look very promising. I've also found the following:

1871
Dudley Union Workhouse
William Baker, Inmate, Widr [sic], 12, None (occupation), Tipton

1881
Dudley Road, Rowley Regis
Edward Felvus, Head, M, 30, Sheet Sheerer iron, Princes End
Mary A. Felvus, Wife, M, 27, Lye Waste
Ellen Felvus, Dau., 5, Dudley Port,
Elizabeth Felvus, Dau., 3, Dudley Port,
Hannah Felvus, Dau., 10m, Dudley Port,
Elizabeth Baker, Mother/Law, W, 35, Laundress, Tipton
William Baker, Brother/Law, U, 21, Labourer, Tipton

Dec. qtr. 1874 Edward Felvus m. Mary A. Baker Dudley 6c 161
