Hi forum experts,
I've been trying to find census records for the early part of the life of my grandmother's grandfather Richard Wilson Cross Boocock b. 1857 in Barrow-in-Furness. You'd think with such a funny distinctive name he'd be easy to find! I guess I'd have to get his birth certificate to find his parents names, but I was wondering if somebody could take a look to see if they could find anything? Would be great to find something as it's the only set of great-great grandparents I'm missing from my tree.
Here is what I do have on him:
1857 Birth Barrow in Furness, Lancashire, England
1882 Jun Age: 25 Marriage to Margaret Jane Mattinson Barrow in Furness, Lancashire, England
1891 Age: 34 Census1 Strand, Harbour Hotel.Barrow in Furness Richard Cross, 35. Beer house manager
1901 Age: 44 Census1 Strand, Harbour Hotel, Barrow in Furness Richard Cross, head, 45, Hotel Manager, Lothersdale, Yorks
1903 Mar Age: 46 DeathCumbria, Cumberland, United KingdomDeaths Mar 1903. Boocock Richard Wilson. 46. Whitehaven. 10b. 450.
Thanks,
Darren

Re: BOOCOCK - Brickwall - Barrow in Furness 1851 census?
So, wasn't he the one found here in 1881 and 1871?

Hi Gardener,
Here's what puzzles me:
1881.1 Luneaton? Street, Barrow in Furness
Henry Cross, head, 37, Carter, Pilling
Betsey, wife, 43,
Richard Bulcock, step son, 24, Carter
William H Bulcock, step son, 20, Smiths labourer
Ishmael B Cross, son, 12, Liverpool
others born Lothersdale
If this is the correct Richard Boocock does that mean that Henry Cross is his step father? Ah, perhaps that's why Richard's full name was Richard Wilson 'Cross' Boocock? A combination of his father and step father's last names?
But there is a marriage record that contradicts this as it seems to be after Richard's birth:
Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1867

Looking at the parish register..

Henry was a 24 year old Spinster. His address was 17 Jarbett Street. His occupation is Policeman. His father is Richard Cross, a Gardener.
Betty was a 30 year old Spinster. Her address was 63 Norfolk Street. Father is William Balcock a Labourer.

Hi Mark,
There is something a bit odd about these records as Richard Wilson Cross Boocock (1857-1903) was born before Betty and Henry's wedding. It says on the census that Richard Boocock was step-son to Henry... I'm assuming that Betty had a previous marriage? Interesting that the kids took her maiden name though... I'm assuming that Bulcock/Boocock was her maiden name as her father was William BALCOCK/BOOCOCK.

They were bastards which did not stop them becoming step-sons when the mother married.
