I have gleaned a lot of information about my great great grandfather, Benjamin Morton, but I have reached the proverbial "brickwall" about the latter years of his life. He was born in Ocker Hill, Tipton in 1836 (baptised 7 February "“ the son of Samuel Morton and Mary Duffell), married Ann Elizabeth Evans (Darlaston, 8 March 1857), lived in West Bromwich and worked in the iron works, up to and including the 1871 census. I cannot find him in any subsequent censuses though his wife and children were living without him in Cradley (1881), Dudley (1891), and Oldbury (1901 and 1911). It appears Ben was a shopkeeper in Dudley in 1872/3 when 3 of their children died and another was born. He was an inn keeper in Oldbury between about 1874 to 1879 (including being cited as a drunken juryman in the Worcester Journal, January 1877), but then I lose him!

He was named in his father"™s will (dated January 1887) and his wife lists herself as a widow in 1901 and 1911 censuses. A family letter (dated September 1880) mentions him having left his wife, though very oddly Ann"™s gravestone inscription (Rood End,1912) says "beloved wife of Benjamin Morton". So did they get back together again? I have hunted the censuses for him from 1881 to 1901 without luck, and even the closest death certificate (West Bromwich Q4 1898) was the wrong person. Can anyone help please?

Hi have you searched for spelling variations? I have a Worton who's Marriage Cert is wrongly recorded as Morton. The references to Widow & Loving Wife could just be a case of acting out an appearance of respectability.

On the childrens marriage for any of them is he down as deceased at any point?

markcdodd - the Stone one isn't him (from probate search), and the other 2 seem a bit far away though I will follow up.

northernlass - I'm new to the forum (!) - can I edit the bcc page for Morton or do you have to do it? As for "deceased" at children's marriages, only a couple of the children survived to marriage age, but I've just found one (Joseph Albert Morton) married at St Edmunds, Dudley 31 March 1902 - so the parish reg is on my "to do" list. Yes, the Dec 1898 W Brom death was the wrong one (wrong age, wrong wife!!).

This one looks like he was a Farmer, in the probate records.

Note on marriage he is not down as deceased which is interesting as I think St Edmunds is one of those
they leave name of father off if deceased and just put deceased .....RF is that correct?
