Hi Mumbles, Samuel is the son of Mary Ann Bayliss born 1807, I have these notes:-

In 1841 & 1851 Samuel is living with his Grandparents, they probably brought him up? Samuel's Baptism says son of Mary Ann Bayliss.

Sarah Walters - Christening, 12 December 1824 St John's Halesowen - Parents - Abraham Walters and Mary. Mary is Mary Godson in 1851 HD Widow 57 Letter Carrier born Northfield. Sarah and family are in her household in Birmingham Street Halesowen. John Hackett died about 1859 and Sarah Married Samuel Bayliss:-

What I am saying is that the Mary and Ann married to John Portman is Mary Ann Bayliss and is validated by fact that their son Thomas Portman is living with grandparents in 1851
He goes on to marry a Sarah Siviter in 1857 . I will add details later
