ARC TBC - Name Change In My Family Tree

Post by Scratch And Patch »

Once again I am asking for some help within my family tree. I am working on my grandmother's side of the family. Her name was Mary Elizabeth Grainger , in 1810 my great - great grandfather was born Chauncey Granger . 1st name change ( i has been dropped ). Now lets fast forward to John Granger b. 1520 Calbourne Parish , Isle of Wight - d. 1549 Shropshire
England. What I have now is sketchy at best. I have the last name only of the last Granger born ( with this spelling ). Granger b. 1490 Calbourne Parish , Isle of Wight - d. 1519 Calbourne Parish , Isle of Wight.

From here on I have another variation spelling of the name , it becomes LeGranger ( French right )? All LeGranger's that I have are born Isle of Wight , but , if they are of Calbourne Parish , I am not sure. Here's what I have. 1st LeGranger b. 1450 - d. 1489 , his father b. 1420 - d.1449 , his father b. 1390 - d. 1419 , his father b. 1350 - d. ? , his father b. 1325 - d. ?

I believe most of this posting can not be anserwed because of the time line , but I thought , it was worth a shot.

Yours Truly
Jeff

Jeff no one can say that these Graingers connect to each that far back without documentary evidence such as you could maybe find with the Aristocracy it is impossible to say. Where did you find that information from? Linell.

It might be worth having a look at historical events around that time to see if there were likely to be any specific anti-French feelings which would precipitate those with French names into Anglicising them. I see from a little light googling that there were uprisings in Yorkshire against a tax imposed by Henry VII which was meant to support Brittany's independence from France as a whole but don't know if similar feelings were rife on the Isle of Wight.

Further digging gives me this site and the 15th century items suggest possible anti-French feeling.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.
