William Dodman 1821/Completed

Post by Scratch And Patch »

In regards to William Dodman , son of John Nicholas Dodman & Mary Pilgrim , b.1821 Snettisham Norfolk Eng. I have whom I think that this information I have just found , states.

Wm. Dodman , est. b. 1820 , Norfolk , by the United Kingdom , Chelsea Pensioner's Service Records 1760 - 1913.

My question is , 1st , can it be confirmed if this is my William. And second what war or battles was he in? Example " Crimean War!!! "

At some point I believe William came back to Eng. For on a 1855 ships log , I have a William Dodman , 2nd Cabin , on the A.J.Westervelt , departing Liverpool & coming into Nova Scotia.

William was listed as a Gardener & was coming to Upper Canada.

Hi
It is impossible to say if that is his Chelsea Pensioner record or not without more details. Do you have any reason to think he was a soldier?
Have you found him in the UK census at all? Do you know when he arrived in Canada?

Bad transcription by FMP.

Reading the actual record, he was discharged on the 28th March 1882 in Cork, Ireland and was 40 years of age making his birth year 1842...not 1820.

The writing is excellent and clear so how they got that wrong in beyond me.

Interesting this William Dodman retired to Sheriff Hales in Shropshire. That is where all families of distinction originate from. (My Dodd are from that tiny village).

He signed up at 9 O'Clock on the 29th February 1860 at Great Massingham.

Interesting he signed his name on enlistment but did a "x" on demobilization.

He is 18 year of age at enlistment which coincides with the 1842 birth year.

He had 6 hospital stay with syphilis that add up to 250 days of Doctors and Nurses staring at the Private's privates.

I am yet to see a soldier of this era who has not had one or two venereal diseases.

He married an Elizabeth Hilton at The Royal Chapel in The Tower Of London in November 1870.

He received a Silver Meal for good conduct and long service.

Apart from some stints in Ireland he spend all his time around London.

From the line of Thomas Dodman b.1754 & his wife Susannah Holman b.1758 , we get William Dodman b.1780 whom marries Hannah Curtis b.1785 , we get William Dodman 1842.
So yes this William Dodman is a relative of mine!!!

Thank You - all for the good work!!!
