Auntie Tot in Lower Gornal ARC TBC?

Post by Pressmith »

I am searching for Auntie Tot who lived in Lower Gornal.I do not know her real name, date of birth or death but she was alive in 1953/1955 when I visited her house. She was probably not my Aunt but there may have been some connection with my grandmother Doris Alfreda Smith nee Kelly who took me to visit her there. My grandmother had a small snuff box with the name J Raybold 1859 which was said to come from her.

Thank you for the information which I already have , my family tree is quite large but my brick wall is Auntie Tot.
Who was she, the only person who might of known is my grandmother who took my brother and I to visit in Lower Gornal at a detached house with a long front garden and stables at the back of the house. The only thing I have is the brass snuff box with J Raybold 1859. Tot is obviously short for something it may even be a family shortening.

I would contact Dudley Family History Society, they have local people with local contacts, and are more likely to have heard or have knows your Aunt Tot. I always find that asking locally is a much better prospect. HTH Linell.

On other census's there are other possibles with different spellings, Raybould, Rabould, Rabould etc, so maybe worth checking to see if there is anyone who may have married into your family - but may be a longshot!

Thanks for all our information. I think the problem is that Tot is a slang name for her actual name so how do you ascertain her real name.I have actually tracked the children of John Raybould born in 1859 but without success however I am sure that there is an answer somewhere.

You don't say which John Raybold you tracked?
I would put my money on this one:

1881
Louise St Matthew Raybold Head Married 58 abt 1823 Male No Occupation Lower Gornal Staffordshire England
Louise St Elizabeth Raybold Wife Married 56 abt 1825 Female Kingswinford Staffordshire England
Louise St Matthew Raybold Son 24 abt 1857 Male Labourer Lower Gornal Staffordshire England
Louise St John Raybold Son 21 abt 1860 Male Labourer Lower Gornal Staffordshire England
Louise St Sarah Raybold Daughter 15 abt 1866 Female Nailer Lower Gornal Staffordshire England
Louise St Mark Raybold Son 13 abt 1868 Male Lower Gornal Staffordshire England

In 1901 at 11 Straits Road, Lower Gornal
202 John Raybould Head 41 abt 1860 Male Sedgley Staffordshire England
202 Mary A Raybould Wife 38 abt 1863 Female Kingswinford Staffordshire England
202 Madaline I M Raybould Daughter 16 abt 1885 Female Sedgley Staffordshire England
202 Edith M Raybould Daughter 15 abt 1886 Female Sedgley Staffordshire England
202 John R Raybould Son 13 abt 1888 Male Sedgley Staffordshire England
202 Mathew Raybould Son 11 abt 1890 Male Sedgley Staffordshire England
202 Sarah J Raybould Daughter 9 abt 1892 Female Sedgley Staffordshire England
202 Joshua Raybould Son 4 abt 1897 Male Sedgley Staffordshire England
202 Rachel B Raybould Daughter 1 abt 1900 Female Sedgley Staffordshire England

They are at the same address in 1911. In 1901 no 13 Straits Road was the Fiddlers Arms Inn and that is still running today. You can see it on Google street view and it is a big place now but some may be old buildings.

I suggest that you talk someone into going on a fieldtrip to the Fiddlers and they could ask if anyone knew Tot or your grandma.
(I've no idea what Tot would be short for! No chance it was a misheard Auntie Dot?)

Thanks for that information I will certainly look into that .My grandmother ,who is now deadl, lived here in London, Essex and Middlesex as did all the family except for this lady who seems to have no connection to the family. My family tree has grown to over 2500 people and having recently solved one long standing problem I am now on the hunt for this one.
I have been concentrating on John Raybold 1859 on the snuff box but maybe I should look at it from a different light.

Did you get the impression that both your grandma and this Auntie Tot were the same age?
When was your grandma born?

who were the wits on your grandmas marriage any clues there?

Do you have any of the marriages for John Raybould b 1859 children?
