First of all note that he was a boatman, presumably on the canals, so would have travelled a lot: his children confirm this as they are born all over the place!

His wife, Elizabeth, gives her birthplace as Weston/ Weston Subedge, Glos. this is on the outskirts of Chipping Campden.

Think I may have found his marriage on IGI:
5 Apr 1847 Benjamin Downing & Elizabeth Bradley.
She seems to have been bapt 7 March 1819 d of John & Mary Bradley.
Both events at ....Chipping Campden, so dates and place are consistent.

I know we cannot be sure without a cert or lookup, but I think Benjamin may have been bapt 27 June 1813, Rowley Regis, s of Josiah & Nancy.

In the 1911 census he gives his birthplace as Gosty Hill - can anyone check his and his possible siblings to see if Josiah lived in Gosty Hill? ( I don't have the discs/ registers for this period).

Other children of Josiah & Nancy (who m 15 Apr 1804, Clent) were:
Emma bapt 17 Sept 1810
Joseph bapt 8 Oct 1811
Both St Giles.
Haven't found any more - can anyone find Josiahs death - cant see him in 1841 census, but, then again can't find Benjamin in 1841 either (at least not in Rowley Regis).

Just noticed on BCC JosIah & Nancy had Emma b 1818.

But the date is wrong, he was b1778 it was Thomas who was born 1767 - some of the details here are wrong for Isaac & Mary's children.

Just spotted that Josiahs burial is on the IGI, BUT it is a submitted entry:
6 June 1824, aged 46

Well spotted - that certainly looks like two of Josiahs children: the ages are a little bit out, but what's new! Looks like Benjamin was unmarried in 1851 so he can't be the one who married Elizabeth if that 1847 marriage I found is correct.

In the meantime I will add bapts for Isaac Downing & Mary Barnsleys children and correct birthdates.

These Benjamin's are confusing - they seem to vary their age at every census! The only one I am sure of is the one who married Ellen Sheldon.

That looks Ok for Josiah, but not all children there.

Having doubts about Benjamin/Elizabeth:
We have three bapts for Benjamin:
6 Feb 1814 St Thomas, Dudley, Benjamin s of Thomas Downing & Mary
(looks like he m Jane Oakley 21 Dec 1835,St Thomas - they appear in 1841 & 1851 census with children)

12 Jan 1817 St Thomas, Dudley, Benjamin s of Isaac & Hannah (he m Ellen Sheldon - on BCC)

Third one is that 1813 one R Regis s of Josiah.

First two above easily found in census. Can't find Benjamin s of Josiah in 1841 unless he is the unmarried one lodging with Esther found by Jo above in 1851 - which means he can't have married Elizabeth Bradley in 1847?

That's the correct bapt for Josiahs son - is Tippity Green near Gosty Hill?
That Gloucestershire marriage is giving me a headache - its either a coincidence, or we may have a fourth Benjamin with no baptism for him?

Thinking about it further there do seem to be four Benjamin's in 1851 census : the two Dudley ones, Benjamin/Elizabeth with children starting to be born in 1848 (so that Glos marriage still looks very likely) AND the Benjamin lodging together with Esther, both unmarried, so possibly brother and sister and therefore probably These are Josiahs children.
