Hi Maths Girl,
Everyone who looks at this 'tree' seems to conclude that George Jeptha was more than a lodger. We had an exchange sometime ago on this and Jimmy's conclusion was the same as mine. My interest is through a Samuel Smith who married Elizabeth (Betsy) Gaze in St Thomas"™ Church, Dudley on 17 April 1853 and their marriage certificate showed his father was William Smith 'nailer- deceased'; I am working on the assumption that this is the William Smith who married a Ruth Green in Rowley Regis on 9 November 1823 (this is confirmed from a transcript of the Parish Registers of St Giles Church, Rowley Regis). Also, that this William Smith is most likely the one who was buried in St Giles"™ graveyard on 12 July 1829, aged 25 years.

The 1841 census shows Ruth, widow, ("˜Nailer"™) with Mary (born in 1824), Samuel (born in 1829) and Emma (born abt 1836), living in Garratt"™s Lane, Rowley Regis. The certificate of Mary's marriage to Solomon Stephens shows her father as a William Smith (miner) while Emma's marriage certificate shows her father as George Smith; hence the assumption about George Jeptha.

There is more if anyone is interested :?: .... H

Hi Jimmy,

A witness to the marriage of William Smith and Ruth Green was a Joseph Green and BCC already shows the christening of a Ruth Green in Halesowen on 20 September 1807, the daughter of an Ann and Joseph Green.

The transcript of the St Giles Parish Registers shows the christening of Mary, the daughter of William and Ruth, in Rowley Regis on 28 March 1824 and this was confirmed from which also shows William"™s occupation as a "˜Nailer"™; it also shows that the family home and Mary"™s birthplace was Garrett"™s Lane, Rowley Regis.

One transcription of the 1841 census record shows another family apparently at the same address as Ruth, comprising Leah Green (born abt 1816) and her children, William and Elizabeth. The 1851 census, shows Ruth with her daughters, Emma and Anna (born abt 1848) but the head of the household is shown to be another widow, Ann Green ("˜Pauper and Former Nailer"™), with her family, William and Elizabeth Green; having regard for her age (75 years) it is likely they are the children of Leah. Of course, the household includes George Jeptha.

No further verifiable record has yet been found of daughter, Anna, but as we know, from 1871 George Jeptha is found "˜boarding"™ with Emma and Issachar, sometimes described as "˜Grandfather"™.

I will follow up with some more"¦.H

Hi Jimmy, again :!:

A transcript of the Parish Register shows the christening of a George Jeptha in the Park Lane Presbyterian Chapel, Cradley on 13 March 1808; his parents are shown as William and Mary, of Rowley Regis. Subsequently, a record of William and Mary"™s marriage was found in the "˜Transcript of Halesowen Parish Registers"™ and showed that William Jeptha married Mary Smith in St John"™s Church, Halesowen on 23 March 1806 :? !

Samuel Smith, my link in all this, was a coal miner who left Rowley Regis and took his wife, Betsy, and his family to go to South Wales; in the 1891 census you can find them living in 15 Waun Bank, Pontycymmer, Llangeinor, with two sons, Samuel (junior) and William (both are also "˜Coal Miners"™).

My research shows that two of the sons of Emma and Issachar Shakespeare, Thomas and Henry also went to Pontycymmer.

Of course, Thomas married Mary Ann Smith but after she died (in the September quarter of 1899), the 1911 census shows him living Pontycymmer, a "˜Miner Hewer"™, and a lodger with his brother, Henry. Thomas died in South Wales in the December quarter of 1914. Henry married Hannah Baker (in 1897) and initially lived in Garratt"™s Lane, Rowley Regis but, subsequently, they also moved to Pontycymmer, where Henry also worked as a "˜Miner Hewer"™. They had at least 4 children, Alice M (1898), Daisy (1901), Eliza (1908) and Harry (1910). Hannah died in the December quarter of 1934.

That is it :!: I hope this is helpful"¦ :P ..H.

Hi nailer and Jimmy

This is all fascinating-- I am going to be away for a week with limited access to computer but look forward to seeing any updates when I get back.

The Jeptha's also pop up elsewhere in my tree -- I think George's brother -- so I could have a double link.

If this is the right William Smith, he can't be Emma's father.

He is here
http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/tr ... =914869428

so Emmas father could be that George Jeptha
I have put a note on Emmas notes.

if we can connect up or add George as Jeptha let me know I will change it from Smith to Jeptha with note

what happens to Anne?

Jimmy,

If we could identify a verifiable record for the daughter, Anna, shown in the 1851 census (born in abt 1848), a certificate might throw some more light on this issue; especially if on any certificate her father is shown as George Smith.
