ARC TBC..............Mills family

Post by apowell »

Hi,

Northern Lass found some interesting information that was posted on a previous thread regarding my ancestor Jechoriah and his parents Daniel & Mary Bott and given the information uncovered by Northern Lass it points to two Mills families (most likely connected somehow).

Daniel Mills and Mary Unknown (possibly Bott andfamily)....
http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/tr ... =950793708

and
Edward Mills Mary Unknown and family...
http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/tr ... =311928564

What I would really like to find on Baptisim records or the 1851 census onwards are William Mills born abt 1831 (Staffordshire) and Joseph Mills born 1826 (Staffordshire) who appear with Jechoriah Mills & family on the 1841 census living in West Bromwich (see below). The information found from IGI site etc suggests that they were not brothers of Jechoriah but I'm hoping related somehow and if we could find out further information it may help us piece this family together.

1841 at Crone hills, Beale St., West Bromwich
Mary Payne 40
Joseph Mills 14
Willm. Mills 10
John Payne 8
/Jackoniah Mills 10
Eliza Mills 5
All born in county

Any ideas ?

Adrian

Hi,

A thank you to Northern Lass for all the excellent research completed to allow me to move forward with my Mills family :P

Good find Peter on Stephen's bapt and I've found a number of children bapts' to Edward & Mary in Tipton:

Joseph Mills
England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
17 Jun 1821
TIPTON,"‹STAFFORD,"‹ENGLAND
parents:
Edward Mills,"‹ Mary

William Mills
England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
30 Jul 1826
TIPTON,"‹STAFFORD,"‹ENGLAND
parents:
Edward Mills,"‹ Mary

John Mills
England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening:
28 Dec 1823
TIPTON,"‹STAFFORD,"‹ENGLAND
parents:
Edward Mills,"‹ Mary

Edward Mills
England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
25 Nov 1827
TIPTON,"‹STAFFORD,"‹ENGLAND
parents:
Edward Mills,"‹ Mary

Phebe Mills
England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
27 Oct 1816
TIPTON,"‹STAFFORD,"‹ENGLAND
parents:
Edward Mills,"‹ Mary

Mary Mills
England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
07 Mar 1819
TIPTON,"‹STAFFORD,"‹ENGLAND
parents:
Edward Mills,"‹ Mary

Abraham Mills
England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
06 Dec 1829
TIPTON,"‹STAFFORD,"‹ENGLAND
parents:
Edward Mills,"‹ Mary

We were thinking that Mary Lees who married Edward Mills mentioned was the same Mary who married John Payne in 1828 but my concern is that Mary Payne on the census returns gives her birth abt 1797-1800 which is far to young for Mary Lees mentioned who was married in 1802 so born abt 1782.

I'm wondering if the Edward & Mary mentioned above is another couple and maybe Edward was the son of Edward & Mary Lees. I've been unable however to find anyother marriage enteries for Edward & Mary and the problem is we have so many Edwards and Marys :?

I'm going to have a real dig around and will be back in touch soon and maybe I can find a connection with the children mentioned above because given the information we've got there must be a connection somehow :?

Many thanks
Adrian

Hi Peter,

Yes some interesting information and I've checked on the census returns for Stephen Mills bap 1814 and found two living in Tipton. One was born earlier abt 1810 married Hannah Cox and the other married twice Ellen Rogers & Elizabeth Ball. I think the Stephen who married Ellen & Elizabeth was the son of our Edward & Mary and interestingly on the 1861 census Stephen had died but living with the family was Eliza Mason unmarried, born Bilston abt 1822. This Eliza looks like the one living with the Mason family and Mary Mills on the 1841 census next door to Mary Payne and family.

Is there a connection with the Mason family somewhere ?

The other interesting bit of information but maybe nothing was when looking for Edward & Mary's son John Mills bapt 28 Dec 1823 on the census I found:

Name:
John Lewis Mills
Age:
29
Estimated Birth Year:
abt 1822
Relation:
Visitor
Where born:
Tipton, Staffordshire, England
Civil parish:
Tipton
County/Island:
Staffordshire
Registration district:
Dudley
Sub-registration district:
Tipton
ED, institution, or vessel:
1g
Household schedule number:
167
Piece:
2029
Folio:
218
Page Number:
49

John was visiting Thomas Mills and family but what struck me was his middle name which may suggest the maiden name of his mother and looking at this:

marriage looked up by Jan 21-6-12
23 Sept 1828 St Thomas Dudley
John Pane otp bach
Mary Mills otp widow
X both
Wit - Wm Lewis /?? Webb?

Is it possible that Mary's maiden name was Lewis and she married Edward Mills naming one of her children with her surname that was common in those days. The problem is I can't find this John Lewis Mills on any other census returns or a suitable marriage entry.

Adrian
