Can anyone tell me why we have to wait so long to be able to access online census info in Britain. Like many people I would love to access the 1921 census records but will have to wait until 2022 which is ridiculous. I understand the 100 year rule but with the growing interest in family tree research I thought this rule would be made a little more flexible. Also why does the USA have more recent census records available?
Many thanks
1921 uk census release

Re: 1921 uk census release
When the people agreed to allow the government to gather such personal data they entered into a contract.
The contract stated that the information would not be made available to the public for 100 years.
For the UK government to release the census earlier they would have to break the contract they made with millions of its citizens.
The US census agreement involved a lesser period of time before release. That is why the 1940 census is being released.
In Australia the first census that you can see the members of the household in will be last years.
All other census, going back to 1834 in some states, were destroyed once the data was collected.
So the UK is like heaven compared to Oz!
If you are doing a probate or other legal search for people you can access the 1921 census.
I think any Freedom Of Information application would also give you limited access.
