Who was John Ward?
John Ward married to Elizabeth Groves on 14th January 1769 in St Bartholomew"™s Church,
Wednesbury, Staffordshire.
The couple went on to have ten known children all born in Wednesbury :-
Sarah 1772, Joseph 1773, Zechariah 1774, Edward 1777, Edward 1778, William 1778,
Thomas 1781, James 1783, Francis 1791 & Maria 1793.
The marriage of John Ward to Elizabeth Groves was by licence & the documents describe
John as John Ward of Walsall, Staffordshire, aged thirty six years who was a widower. His
employment was described as being a hose follower carrying coals.
Elizabeth Groves was a spinster aged 18.
As Ward was my maiden name I was hoping to look into my Ward line as far back as
possible but I seem to have come to a complete standstill with John Ward who was born
about 1733. I have no idea who his first wife was or whether they had any children & I have
no idea who his parents were.
If anyone can help me in any way to try to further my knowledge about John Ward I would
be most grateful please.
Thank you.

Re: Who was John Ward?
Do you have his death details to assist with his approximate year of birth? Wedding details are not the most accurate for that, especially when elder Widowers are marrying a much younger bride.
He was living in Walsall at the time of marriage but could have been born anywhere and his age really needs to be narrowed down a bit.

Re: Who was John Ward?
Sorry for pinching this thread - couldn't find the one about Henry Ward.
We are related here Brock - Henry Ward who lived in the Miners Arms is my brother in Law's Great Grandfather. Henry was married to Emma Alsopp - I have added some of her family on BCC here : http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/fa ... sop-Family
His son Henry was also in the pub trade - he owned and ran the Good Intent Pub in Gornal.
I haven't added any of my Wards to BCC yet but will do this weekend if I can.

Re: Who was John Ward?
Hello again Brock
Have now added some more Wards to BCC. Do you have the details of the marriage for Thomas Ward (abt 1816) and Sarah. I have found a possible marriage - 1842, St Bartholomew, Wednesbury for Thomas Ward and Sarah Cartwright.
The only Thomas Ward I can find in the area in 1841 is in Coppice Street with Joseph and Sarah, there is also a Sarah, aged 15 in the house.
I have found a baptism for Thomas, son of Joseph and Sarah, 8 Dec 1816 in Tipton - amongst the children is Sarah, Baptised 14 March 1824.
- is this the information you have ?

Re: Who was John Ward?
Wow, there was me thinking that it was just a coincidence of the name Ward being a family name in past times in Tipton for both of us without us actually being linked because when I checked out your tree I couldn't see any joint ancestors listed but it seems that you have now tracked down our connection which is great!
I have a copy of the marriage certificate for Thomas Ward & Sarah Cartwright (if you send me your e-mail address in a PM I can forward a copy to you if you wish). You are correct in thinking that they married in 1842. They actually married on 24th January 1842 at St Bartholomew's, Wednesbury. Thomas is recorded as being a bachelor aged 24 working as a puddler ~ his father was Joseph Ward, coker. Sarah was recorded as a 23 year old spinster, her father was John Cartwright, a miner.
I have the children of Thomas & Sarah as :- Thomas 1844, Lucy 1846, William 1857, Joseph 1851 & Henry 1859 ~ all born in Tipton.
Thomas Ward, husband of Sarah Cartwiright, was the son of Joseph & Sarah Ward & he was baptised on 8th December 1816 in Tipton.
Perhaps we could share info & both learn from each other which would be good.
