Martin-Lay family ARC TBC?

Post by Silver surfer »

Have been having another look at Thomas Martin's will and trying to piece together all his nieces and nephews to put in my tree. Didn't realise some are already on bcc, put on by peterd and NL. Still wonder how he managed to accumulate such a vast estate. Think he inherited from his sister Sarah Lay. I did email someone at Dudley about where some of his properties were but he couldn't answer me. Surprised he wasn't more well known.

Whats your interest Peter or did you just copy the will?

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Don't know what else to look for thanks NL. Thomas c1743 didn't mention a wife or children in his will and left most of his property to nieces, nephews, friends and a few servants. My line comes from his sister Elizabeth c 1748 who married John Tibbitts. Other sisters, Sarah mar ?Lay, Hannah m John Parott, and Catherine mar ?Evans. This site has provided a bit of info

http://www.blackcountryhistory.org
Found the will of Benjamin thereon and also the execution of Abel Hill for the murder of Mary Martin and her infant son. He came from the same area where Thomas had his mines. She was killed c1820 and his will is dated 1825. The other possibility is that he never married.

Whatever can be found would be a bonus.

There is a handbill relating to execution of Abel Hill of Sedgley,Ref No: DX-107/1 at Wolverhampton Archives dated 1820
An account of the life, trial, and behaviour of Abel Hill, who was executed ... for the murder of Mary Martin and her infant son.
Abel was described as 23 years old, a colliery engineer at Prince's end, near Bilston, so he would have been born c1797, so not one on bcc. Could be son perhaps as same location. The child's name was Thomas Martin, 16mths old.

It also gives a ref to Wolverhampton Chronicle 2 Aug 1820. Prob be able to find him in the online newspapers on FMP. No access to them at mo till I go back to Surrey.
For more information contact: Wolverhampton Archives

If Mary had an infant son in 1820 she couldn't have been Thomas's wife unless he married late in life. :?

Just found this bit in online newsps, Cambridge Chronicle 4Aug 1820
Abel Hill was committed to Stafford gael on tbe 15th March last, charged witii the wilful murder of Mary Martin and her son, (a child about 16 months old), by drowning them in the canal, near the Roundhouse, a little distance from Bilston.
