ARC -Spring-jumping champion Joe Darby, b. Windmill End 1861

Post by Dennis »

"Netherton was the birthplace of spring-jumping champion Joe Darby, born at Windmill End in 1861. Not only was he a superb athlete but a showman as well, appearing before King Edward VII in Covent Garden, London. In 1887 he defeated W.G Hamlington, then the World Champion spring-jumper. A statue showing the athlete in a crouched position, about to leap, stands on the junction of the Halesowen Road and Church Road. Some of his more famous exploits are written on plaques on the plinth of the statue." Thus Wikipedia under "Netherton". I put him on BCC a while ago, but in the context of the Danks thread his wife is of interest: Sarah Danks b. about 1866 Windmill End, Netherton. I think her line is John Danks 1843-1913 and Sarah Cartwright b. abt. 1841 m. 3 May 1864 Old Swinford; James Danks b. Netherton 1810-1879 marr. 9 Aug 1830 Kingswinford Sarah Golding c. 1812 Netherton - 1863. I believe his parents were Thomas Danks c. 1770 Dudley and Mary Harrison c.1774 Dudley.

When I was about 10 in the early 50's my father told my brothers and I about Jumping Joe and said he was a relative on the Darby line.
He told us :-
He could jump off and on a basket of eggs without breaking any
He could jump across the canal in two jumps without getting his feet wet
He could jump from floor onto billiard table and off again the other end
and many other feats.
We did not believe him so he took us to a pub just off main street in Dudley and there was a display all about Jumping Joe . The pub landlord was a descendant of Jumping Jack and he knew my father and confirmed we were all related as distant cousins on Darby side
