1841 Census occupation notification.

Hi,

I was looking at the 1841 Census, and I have attached an image of my ancestors census.

William Toy, 20.

Under his profession/trade column it says something like 'M-L' - does this mean manual labour?

Actually if people wouldn't mind - I'd love to learn what all the people on this page did - trying to get a picture of the community they lived in.

I think it says M.S....Male Servant.
the one below is F.S....Female Serv.

would think its ML as opposite page is labourer and L are the same ?

No Peter that is definitely an S - Male Servant, I am sure there was no such thing as a Male Labourer back then, you were just a Labourer. Happy Xmas from Linell.

I agree with male servant. As it looks as though he was the only male servant on the farmer then I expect it did mostly outdoors work anyway so he could have been a farm labourer sort of person? I seem to recall that at some point a distinction was made between indoors and outdoors farm work for the women but I'm having trouble imagining a lot of indoors work fro a male in a small household at least.

The 1835 Map of Green Hill just has Green Farm where the Darby family lived and the Coach House, the other places, such as Lion Wharf and Crock Street were a bit further on, the people enumerated on that page weren't neighbours as we perceive today.

Wow thanks for all replying on Christmas Day :) that's dedication.

Where is this 1835 map of Green Hill? Do I need to pay for that? I acquired a map of Quinton in late 1800s - but haven't found an earlier map thus far.

How interesting. Greenhill is now Greenhill Road, off Long Lane, which is where I grew up!

Well, I think the land originally belonged to Lord Cobham of Hagley Hall.

I believe Lord Cobham owned most of the land in and around Halesowen, have to check the Manor Rolls. When did you live in Greenhill Margaret, I grew up in Hawne Lane and then moved to Hasbury not that far from The Hill area.
