Jim & Elizabeth Illman

Post by SRD »

From transcriptions of West Grinstead St George 1559 - 1812 parish records I have baptisms for three children:
Elizabeth ILLMAN 20-Jun 1758
Ann ILLMAN 27-May 1760
John ILLMAN 27-May 1760
All born to Jim & Elizabeth ILLMAN.

Not only is Jim an unusual name in those times I can find no suitable marriage for a Jim or James to an Elizabeth.

IGI has them as children of Timothy (Tim) & Elizabeth but only John (as Jno) as a 'proper' record, the girls are post 1991 additions which I have frequently found to be unreliable, more as confirmations of others optimistic research than backed up by 'evidence'.

If it is Tim then transcribed records give me a possible marriage:
Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Barcombe, East Sussex, Date: 25 Jan 1756:
Subject: Timothy HILMAN, Ringmer
Spouse: Elizabeth THOMAS, otp (B)

And records for the Barcombe area have more children:
Barcombe St Mary 1580 - 1900 Thomas HILMAN s 09-May 1756 Timothy HILMAN Elizabeth HILMAN (note on the record: It is that HILMAN that was married here from Ringmer, but it is said he belongs to Malling)
South Malling St Michael the Archangel 1629 - 1911 Timothy HILLMAN s 14-Aug 1757 Timothy HILLMAN Elizabeth HILLMAN
South Malling St Michael the Archangel 1629 - 1911 Elizabeth HILMAN d 04-Mar 1759 Timothy HILMAN Elizabeth HILMAN

But I'm not convinced; the Illmans/Hilmans/Hillmans were mainly Ag Labs and not prone to travelling, Barcombe and West Grinstead are at opposite ends of the county and for them to be dotting to and fro (note the 1759 South Malling baptism sandwiched between the West Grinstead ones) seems unlikely to me.

Can any of you Staffies come up with any more info or suggest any areas of exploration?
