dna geneaology tests - advice needed

Post by usignuolo »

My brother and I have been thinking about having dna geneaology tests. The thing is I am bewildered to say the least on which tests to have. It seems to be possible to have a simple or advanced test to trace just paternal or just maternal or both sides. Do we both need all the tests? I thought for example that paternal dna can only be traced through the paternal line so that would mean my brother should take that one, but I don't need to. And can anyone explain what the various tests that make up a package of geneaolgy based testing, cover?

If you wish to get traced back to one of the original six Eves then it will cost a bit but is fascinating.

The more money you pay the more accurately they can tell your heritage in terms of percentages. i.e. 20% African, 50% Western European etc.

Simply put, the more money you spend the more laboratory tests they will do and the more information they can provide.

It is simply a matter of reading through each package offered and selecting one to suit you.

I really can't give any more advice than that.

The y-chromosome is only carried by males and since I was only interested in my paternal side, I opted for a y-chromosome test. For statistical purposes, the more markers you have tested, the more useful will be the results in identifying posible matches. That said, once tests beyond 46 markers are used, there seems to be a fall-off in value for money.

Children only inherit mitochondrial DNA from their mother, so only the maternal line is identified. If a brother and sister have the same mother, it does not matter which sibling has this test. It may be cheaper/simpler for the brother to have both tests done at the same time.

There are several web-sites that may be able to help you make up your mind. I had my test (and those for two males sharing my surname) done via 'Ancestry'. I think parts of their web-site are available before subscription. Try http://dna.ancestry.com/welcomeRedirect.aspx?country=uk

The testing organisation will include your data (anonymously) in its databases and notify you of any matches. However, once you have your results, there are several other databases to which you can submit your data to find matches.
