Retirement

You know what? My blood is boiling, ready to explode!!! Why???

I retired earlier on this year, going over retirement age and I"™ve just opened a letter from the local council office informing me they are building some apartments which will be ready in 2010 for people over the age of 55 to rent or purchase via shared ownership"¦. to encourage residents to enjoy a healthy and active retirement.

I reckon I"™m in pretty good health and active (more or less) thank you very much. Why should I want to give up my home and live in a community with people who could be years and years older than me. Now don"™t get me wrong, I"™ve got nothing against the really elderly, my in-laws are in their 80s and are wonderful, but I wouldn"™t like to spend my time in the immediate future living in the same block of apartments.

I know what the councils over the country are trying to do as it"™s been in the news lately. They are attempting to get older people out of their homes, bung them in apartments, so that their houses can be sold to younger people. WHY DON"™T THEY BUILD SOME COUNCIL HOUSES. Okay, we all know why, because they haven"™t got the money.

Off me soap box now

Yes I know that Mike, my cousins bought my aunties for her, she had been a council tenant for about 50 years, she died a few years later and the they had the profit.

Don't know what the state of nursing homes /residential homes is like in the UK, in Denmark they're mostly council owned.

Most of the modern ones are like small flats (with a very small kitchen area and bathroom), with a comunal area where you can have meals etc. Some of the older ones have been referbished like this as well.
There's one just up the road from us it caters for all ages and states of health - they've just built some sheltered housing for drug addicts and alcoholics that are being rehabiltated (although they did think that other councils would send their recovering addicts there, they forgot that most people wouldn't want to move away from what they know!)
