COMPLETED Adin Hadley

Post by SRD »

In my perigrinations around various genealogy websites (no names, no pack drill) I discover that several people are confused about Adin Hadley's wives. With your assistance I know that Adin Hadley (b 1838) married Ann Evans in 1860
FreeBMD has
Marriages Mar 1860 (>99%)
Evans Ann Wolverhampton 6b 616
Hadley Adin Wolverhampton 6b 616

They had 3 daughters;
Births Sep 1863 (>99%)
HADLEY Pamela Ulverstone 8e 593
Births Sep 1865 (>99%)
Hadley Ann Maria Ulverstone 8e 638
Births Dec 1867 (>99%)
Hadley Lydia Sarah Ulverstone 8e 644

They appear to be living together in 1871
102 Anson Street Dalton Lancs
Adin Hadley Head 33 Joiner employ 2 men Born Rowley Regis
Ann Hadley Wife 34 Born Preston Lancs
P Hadley Daur 7 Scholar Born Dalton Lancs
A M Hadley Daur 5 Scholar Born Dalton Lancs
Lyda S Nudly Daur 3 Child Born Dalton Lancs

Then Adin appears to have remarried:
Marriages Jun 1878 (>99%)
Hadley Adin King's N. 6c 673
RAYBOULD Ann Eliza King's N. 6c 673

All this is pretty much covered in BCC if not actually confirmed. I'm assuming that, due the rarity of his forename and the similarity of his families, that the Adin involved is one and the same.
The only suitable Ann Eliza Raybould I can find is
Births Dec 1838 (>99%)
RAYBOULD Ann Eliza Stourbridge 18 419
who doesn't seem to appear on BCC.

By 1881 census Adin, Ann Eliza and Ann Evans youngest daughter Maria were running a pub:
39 Neptune Powke Lane Rowley Regis
Adin Hadley Head 44 Licencesed Victualler Born Rowley Regis
Ann E. Hadley Wife 42 Born Brockmoor
Maria Hadley Daur 15 Born Barrow in Furness Lancs

(see also 1880 Kellys Directory; Hadley Adin, Neptune, Old Hill)

The other two daughters were living at:
1881 has
71 Wrights Lane Rowley Regis
William Mogg Head 72 Coal Miner Born Feckenham Worcs
Anne Mogg Wife 57 Seamstress Born Dudley
William Kesterdon GSon 16 Breeze Burner (Coke) Born Rowley Regis
George Kesterdon GSon 14 Breeze Burner (Coke) Born Rowley Regis

Pamela Hadley G Daur 17 Barmaid Inn Born Barrow in F Lancs
Lydia S. Hadley G Daur 13 Born Barrow in F Lancs
Image looks like G Daur live at 70
taken from the thread I posted a couple of months back.

Further to that I have
1891 census
71 Cradley Road Rowley Regis
Richard Ellis Head 34 Moulder Born Wednesbury Staffordshire
Pamila Ellis Wife 26 Born Barrow in F Lancs
Arthur Ellis Son 5 Born Rowley Regis
Elsie Ellis Daur 2 Born Rowley Regis
Adin Hadley Father in Law wid 53 Joiner Journeyman Born Rowley Regis
Lydia S Hadley Sister in Law 23 Born Barrow in F Landcashire

FreeBMD has one possible death for Ann Eliza Hadley but it's after the 1881 census where Adin is described as widower.
Deaths Jun 1883 (>99%)
HADLEY Ann Eliza 45 Dudley 6c 15
but FMP has a better one:
HADLEY Ann Eliza Dudley Staffordshire 1880

Now then Staffies; can you find Adin's first wife Ann's death or their divorce, any children from the marriage to Ann Eliza and can you confirm that the FMP 1880 death is actually Ann Eliza Raybould's?

Does the record on BCC need updating further to include the Rayboulds?

Of course all this is completely out of the window if you manage to find a second Adin Hadley!

Ann's demise

Name: Anne Hadley
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1836
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1877
Age at Death: 41
Registration district: Barrow-in-Furness
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 8e
Page: 557

She actaully died on the 29th October 1877 and lived at 102 Upper-Anson street, Barrow-in-Furness.

Adin is granted administration of her will. Probate is the 19th December 1877. Anne is used throughout, not Ann.

You have me confused with Ann Eliza. She is alive and kicking in the 1881 census and Adin is not a widow!!!!

1881 census transcription details for: 39, Neptuneane, Rowley Regis
National Archive Reference:
RG number: RG11 Piece: 2860 Folio: 48 Page: 39

Reg. District: Dudley Sub District: Rowley Regis
Parish: Rowley Regis Enum. District:
Ecclesiastical District: City/Municipal Borough:
Address: 39, Neptuneane, Rowley Regis
County: Staffordshire
Name Relation Condition Sex Age Birth Year Occupation , Disability Where Born
HADLEY, Adin Head Married M 44 1837 Licensed Victualler Rowley Regis Staffordshire
HADLEY, Ann E Wife Married F 42 1839 Licensed Victualler Wife Brockmoor Staffordshire
HADLEY, Maria Daughter Single F 15 1866 Barrow in Furness Lancashire

That woul dmake the 1883 death in Dudley a perfect match.

Thanks Mark, I'd misread the date on the 1891 census

So it looks like Adin came back from Barrow to his home area after Ann(e)'s death. He obviously left his joinery business behind too. I wonder if Ann Raybould was in the pub trade?

Thomas Lowe was licensee of the Neptune, 117 (39) Powke Lane, Old Hill 1870 - 1872
Adin Hadley was licensee in 1881
Caleb Price was licensee in 1892

Can't find any mention of any Rayboulds at any of the pubs in Rowley Regis

Thanks Maggie, quick turnover of landlords there, I wonder why?

Just to confuse matters further FreeBMD has thrown up another possible marriage for Ann Eliza Raybould
Marriages Sep 1859 (>99%)
Bellingeham Thomas Wolverhampton 6b 568
Bellingham Thomas Wolverhampton 6b 568
Raybould Ann Eliza Wolverhampton 6b 568
Robinson Josiah Wolverhampton 6b 568
Vernon Sarah Wolverhampton 6b 568

I can only find the one Ann Eliza Raybould on FreeBMD or FMP.
Births Dec 1838 (>99%)
RAYBOULD Ann Eliza Stourbridge 18 419

FMP census info suggests she didn't marry Bellingham but might have married Josiah Robinson:
FMP 1861
Household Robinson Ann Eliza 1839 22 F Tynemouth Northumberland
Household Robinson Josiah 1838 23 M Tynemouth Northumberland

But, there again, she might not have married either of them:
FMP 1851 census
Household Raybould Ann Eliza 1839 12 F Dudley Staffordshire
FMP 1861 census
Household Raybould Ann 1839 22 F Dudley Staffordshire

Fun this isn't it!

That's not at all unusual for those times.

Thanks Maggie
What does the Himley mean?

And presumably by Lic means by special Licence. Why would one need a special licence?

Licence means they have bypassed the banns.

It is either a licence given by parent or guardian if the bride or groom is under 21 years of age or a stat dec stating they are not married and of legal age.

Banns are in place to give people a chance to object to the marriage.

A licence allows the marriage to occur quicker (before the bump shows  ).

Excellent, Thanks.

Do we know that the Ann Eliza Raybould who married Josiah Robinson is the same Ann Eliza Raybould who married Adin Hadley in this record:
Marriages Jun 1878 (>99%)
Hadley Adin King's N. 6c 673
RAYBOULD Ann Eliza King's N. 6c 673

If so Josiah must have died or there was a divorce.

I wouldn't think so. I would rather think that if you can work out which one this is, that married Robinson, then you can cross her off as an option for the one who married Adin Hadley.
A second marriage would be under the woman's surname from the first marriage (normally).

Trouble is I've not been able to find another Ann Eliza Raybould that fits the dates and places.

Can anyone check the details of the marriage to Adin to see if the parents are different?

12 JUN 1878 Saint Mary, Moseley By Birmingham, Worcester, England according to the IGI. Not sure who has access to the records?
