Harriet Smith, Oldbury

Post by BlueSavannah »

Hello,

I am hoping for some advice re Oldbury and tracking down the birth reg/baptism of my great x 3 grandma, Harriet Smith. She is born aprox 1848c and in Oldbury according to census returns. On the 1851 census, she is in Oldbury she is with her mother Eliza Bayley formerly Smith nee Hales. She is aged 2.

I am wanting to establish who exactly her father is. She names Eliza's husband Benjamin Bayley/Bailey (married in 1849 in West Brom) as her own father when she marries; however, I believe she was born in the months prior to this marriage and could be a child to Eliza's former husband, Henry Smith. She could even be illitigimate as I cannot locate Henry's death as present due to the high amount of them.

Henry & Eliza are in Oldbury on the 1841 census, and Eliza and Benjamin are still there in 1851.

I have emailed Sandwell register office today but they have responded to say they have no Harriet registered between these years with a mother named Eliza Smith nee Hales. They recomended I contact Dudley office which I have done.

I am wondering if parish records may be something to consider; however, I am based in Manchester so visiting the area isnt an option for me

Any advice is much appreciated.

Hello,

Many thanks for moving the thread. I wasnt sure where to post it.

I emailed Sandwell this morning with details I know of Harriet and her mother Eliza and asked if it was possible they could check between 1846 and 1850 for any Harriet births with a mother named Eliza; I also gave them Eliza's surnames. They emailed me back this afternoon to say they had checked and they had no registrations of any Harriet's with a mother named Eliza. I had seen the 1849 one and it does stand out as the most likely one.

I have the marriage cert for Eliza Smith to Benjamin Bailey. It took place at Christ Church, West Bromwich, on the 15th May 1849. Eliza's father was named as Richard Hales, Farmer.

Her first husband was Henry Smith.

I have looked on the BCC site and this branch are not on there. I know Eliza was actually born in Lincolnshire and I am not sure about Henry. I think its just their children that are born in Oldbury.

Regards
Claire

I will email them again :P

I havnt found Henry Smith & Eliza Hales marriage yet. I would have thought it took place in Lincs as at least their first child was born in Navenby which is where Eliza is born. I would say aprox 1825c.

1841:
Stone Street, Oldbury
Henry Smith - 45 - Lab - N
Eliza Smith - 30 - N
Betsey Smith - 13 - N
Thomas Smith - 7 - N
Susanna Smith - 1 - Y
Ann Smith - 5 months - Y

I believe that Lucianna on the 51 census is actually Susanna. Mary Ann on the 51 could be Ann on the 41.

Eliza was born in Navenby, Lincolnshire according to the 61 and 71 census (which she appears on without Benjamin...he is supposedly still alive in 61 but she is widowed in 71).

On the 41 census, she and Henry Smith both state no to born in county. I think they possibily married somewhere in Lincs, had a couple of children and then moved and settled in Oldbury.
