He couldn't have been a stranger - I just wonder if they had business connections. Frank Dawes was definitely a Solicitor at the time. A copy of the will will give more detail on him and on Samuel Birch. There is still a Dawes solicitor in Oldbury - probably related.

I am getting more and more

confused about the Birches.
On the 1861 census there is a Sampson aged 4 b Oldbury. I cannot see a birth for him. Could this be Samuel. He is not on the 1871 census. Could he be boarded out. A Benjamin is on the 1871 aged 13. I am now wondering if these are two different William Birches on the 1861 and 1871 census. He could have had a son Samuel Born about 1885 but I cannot see him on an 1891 census with William his father. The Samuel who married Mary Mansell Jones was married in 1900.

I would say the 1861 and the 1871 is the same William, looking at the image The Rising Sun pub is in Park Lane.
and Sampson could have been a nick name for Benjamin.
1861 Rising Sun (pub?) Oldbury.
William Birch 27 Beerhouse keeper.
Catherine Birch 20.
John Birch 5.
Sampson Birch 4.
Frances Fane 24 visitor Appleby, Derbyshire.
rest oldbury.
1871 Park Street, Oldbury.
BIRCH, William Head M 37 1834 Worcestershire Licensed Victualler.
BIRCH, Eliza Wife F 33 1838 Worcestershire.
BIRCH, John Son M 15 1856 Worcestershire.
BIRCH, Benjamin Son M 13 1858 Worcestershire Image says Benjamin, but could this be Samson??
BIRCH, Fanny Daughter F 10 1861 Worcestershire.
YORK, James Lodger M 30 1841 Worcestershire.

Not sure where you are up to with this thread
do you need more info on it? or can it be archived?
Re electoral registers I am sure I have looked at ones earlier than 1919
at Sandwell you would need to contact them to see what years they have
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Mi ... index.htmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_ ... ed_KingdomDo you have the birth certif for JOhn or Sampson just to check maiden name on mother
think need some certifs really too just to verify info

There are some notes on line for this family:-
Could some kind person please look up William Birch, (spouse Catharine) who appears on the 1861 census aged 27 with two children, John 5, and Sampson, 4. I am trying to track William (father) and his parents on the 1841 and1851 census when he would have been 7 and 17 respectively.
Also my husband's great granfather John W Birch is on the 1891 census aged 8 and his parents are John and Annie, aged 34 and 31. I am trying to track John on the 1871 and 1881 census aged 14 and 24.
1851 Address Titford
Thomas Birch, Head aged 41 born 1810 Oldbury,Coal Miner
Ann Birch, Wife aged 42 1809 Oldbury
Mary Ann Birch, Daughter aged 19 1832 Oldbury
William Birch, Son aged 17 1834 Oldbury, Glass Maker
Thomas Birch, Son aged 14 1837 Oldbury,Glass Maker
Birch, John Birch, Son aged 10 1841 Oldbury
Elizabeth Birch, Daughter aged 5 1846 Oldbury
1841 Address: Park House Lane, Halesowen, Oldbury
Thomas Birch, aged 30 1811 Coal Miner
Ann Birch, aged 30 1811
Joseph Birch, aged 11 1830
Mary Birch, aged 9 1832
William Birch, aged 7 1834
Thomas Birch, aged 5 1836
He was, it appears married three times at least, firstly in 1856 to Elizabeth Walker who died in 1858, then he married Catherine Nash in 1860. She died 1866 so he married Eliza Burton b1838, in 1868. Where Hannah comes in we are still puzzled unless Hannah and Eliza were the same person. We dont have a death date for Eliza or Hannah.
Looks like there are a few people researching this family, HTH Linell.

Ok what I will do is move this to the Brickwall section so you can chip away at it.
