Knickers or Bloomers were fastened with Buttons until the early 20th Century, the Glue which bonded elastic was invented by Goodyear Tyres from Wolverhampton, lets here it for Goodyear Tyres. :!:

We'd have been in a pretty pickle without elastic - especially the school ones we had to wear for netball - I remember when we had cotton knee socks and had to put a bit of elastic round them to keep them up. Made your leg go numb after a couple of hours.
