Knickers or Bloomers were fastened with Buttons until the early 20th Century, the Glue which bonded elastic was invented by Goodyear Tyres from Wolverhampton, lets here it for Goodyear Tyres.

We'd have been in a pretty pickle without elastic - especially the school ones we had to wear for netball - I remember when we had cotton knee socks and had to put a bit of elastic round them to keep them up. Made your leg go numb after a couple of hours.
