Hi NL, I think John Stokes and Charles are one of the same. Must have been the name Charles was known by. Mary doesn't seem to have lived with him after about 1871
I suppose she only knew him as John or she had forgotten

I got
matilda- dau of James and Sarah - son of James and Catherinre
so to be first cousins once removed James needs to be sib of a Joseph and Hannah
